The YouTube TV Thread

I've had the new update for the past week or so. Nothing earth shattering, though the progressive RW/FF is helpful on occasion. The update actually seems to have "broken" at least as many things as it's improved, however. For example, in the new interface I can't resume a recorded show I was just watching by arrowing down to select among the last few channels/recordings I had accessed anymore (I often like to flip back and forth between a live sporting event and a recorded show). It only lets you access live channels now and its "recommendations." I also don't see the closed captioning button while watching certain recordings (though I can turn on closed captioning from live TV and then go back to my recording). The larger screenshots while RW/FFing aren't big enough to make that much of a difference for me.

I can't believe all the major cable TV providers that have big longstanding contracts with ESPN wouldn't add it. Maybe it just hasn't been announced yet (two weeks to go before launch). Currently in my area, only Hulu, PS Vue, DirecTV, and YTTV are listed as carrying it. Anyone can check availability here: Get ACCN | ESPN

YTTV adds ~300,000 customers (according to Craig Moffett, so grain of salt)

The problem with this number (and the 300,000 gain to Hulu Live) is it shows more people are dropping live TV and are not replacing it with a streaming live TV service, 1.5 million dropped Traditional Service this quarter, that means 900,000 are going with Netflix, Hulu, OTA, etc instead.

By the way, putting up my outdoor Mohu antenna today, if I get a great signal from it I then will be buying a quad Tablo with a 8TB external Hard Drive and dropping You Tube TV, there is just so much content on the streaming services I cannot catch up.

Since we binge everything, we can wait till live TV shows on cable channels premiere on the streaming services, the shows on the main networks watch in full next summer on the Tablo when they are done.

I might do the same if it wasn't for sports.

Gave up on sports, tired of getting frustrated and upset while watching them.

As a lifelong San Diegan, I've developed the perfect antidote to disappointment and frustration . . . I turn off the TV as soon as things start to go bad, and if I hear things turned out okay in the end, I'll watch my recording. Yes, I'm the worst kind of fair weather fan. ;)

It is folly to assume that all viewers are logically going with streaming alternatives. For some, they may be dropping TV altogether (not as unimaginable as it used to be before TV as an art form went in the dumper).

You also need to consider the interval over which the survey data was captured. Summer has always been a bad time for conventional pay TV. The question is whether or not the situation improves with the arrival of Fall and the introduction of new TV episodes.

Except the last quarter reported for Traditional Providers and when this data was captured was for April, May and June.

The 3rd Quarter report is the Summer Report-July, August and September is not out yet of course.

From the article-

Both Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV added around 300,000 users in the second quarter, analyst Craig Moffett estimates

My sister and brother in law saw YouTubeTV in action at a friends lake house last week. I went over to their house today to do some other things and ended up adding the app to their Sony tv. Their doing the trial this week and then will most likely drop Dish after 20yrs.

I initially was going to set it up on their FireTv, but I didn’t realize they didn’t have a YouTubeTV app ready yet for the fire tv. Of course their LG tv doesn’t have the app on its older version of webOS either, so guess a Roku or Chromecast May be in order next week also, if they do decide to continue with the streaming.

Windstream has screwed up their fiber for several years and only offered 15/1 fiber to the home in their neighborhood since it was built. Apparently they did some upgrades last year when the neighborhood’s other half finally started filling in, but no one mentioned it to the exiting homeowners. After losing service last week, they found out they should have had a free modem and service upgrade to 200/200 last year, so that has prompted a closer look at streaming too.

This will cut their bill by more than 50% per month.

Google and Amazon don't play together so firetv devices still don't support YTTV. My LG C8 TV works pretty good with YTTV with the exception I need to reboot (unplug) TV about every 3rd day because UI freezes. The bedroom and family room have Roku devices even they stop responding on occasion.
I don't mind the occasional freezes since I have my entertainment including internet cost just over $100 month. Centurylink 40/5 $55, YTTV $49. I don't count Amazon Prime because with free shipping I consider it a necessity and small price to pay for living in rural America.

You can side-load YTTV on the Firestick until Google releases the Firestick app they promised this spring. I think they timeframe was summer/fall, so it shouldn't be long now.

Side-loading YTTV on a FireTV device is a less than ideal experience from everything I've heard. I understand it's gotten better, but probably still not a good idea for someone who wouldn't have the tech knowledge to do it and maintain it themselves if the app needs to be reinstalled or upgraded.

Its been a year since I used it on the fire tv, but when I sideloaded it back then, honestly I could not tell the difference in it, or the roku app. It worked and looked exactly the same.

I heard sideloading YTTV only gave you 480p/30fps quality, and it could be glitchy, some functions not working properly or missing. Though like I said, I've heard there have been improvements. Here's a description from a blog article about installing YTTV on FireTV from June 2018.

Lastly, since the app is very unofficial, don’t expect it to be issue free or full featured. For starters, 1080p and 60 fps video don’t appear to be working through the app, so you’ll be limited to 480p and 30 fps streaming. Several people have said they’ve needed to clear the app’s cache and data, as well as reboot their device, to get it working again when having issues. If you’re okay with these issues and limitations, here’s how to install and configure the app on a Fire TV device.

I didnt use it often, as I had other methods for watching, but I did it just to do it. It definitely was not 480p or 30fps, not on mine.

Not surprised that not everyone had the same experience however, being that the app was not supported, although I am not sure exactly what would cause the difference.
