Hopper 3 freezing on PIP sports bar mode

This is the second Hopper 3 that has had this problem. When I switch to the 4 screen PIP mode, the 4 screens will come up, but 3 of the 4 channels are frozen, 1 channel is displaying fine, and audio works. If I try to switch out of PIP mode, the screen freezes on the 4 screen view, interlaced with blurred screen fragments. Audio continues to work, and I can even change channels and hear the channels changing in the background though the screen never changes. I have to reboot to get the screen back.

I called Dish, and they are sending a technician out next week. I don't have high hopes though since they just changed the Hopper 3 months ago because of the same issue. Anyone else having the issue?

If you're on eastern arc you can't have any standard definition channels in either of the top two quads. It's a software 'feature' that has been there since MultiView was introduced.

To successfully engage MultiView you should first tune to four consecutive HD channels and then engage MultiView and then be sure not to tune to an SD channel in either of the top two quads.

Yup. I've ran into this. Sports mode wasn't usable for me with Hopper 3.
Let me guess, you're running a hybrid switch ? DPH42 ?
The problem went away when I changed hardware and went with a EA Hybrid lnb.

It doesn't matter if I use a DPH42 switch or a Hybrid LNB here. The only fix is to not have any SD channels in the upper two quads.

Right, of course. Let's wait to hear from the OP. I had HD on every quad and sports mode would not work for me on the DPH42. Never. Not once. Every time I tried I had to reboot my hopper as described by the op. I'm not new at troubleshooting.
The second the hardware was changed the issue stopped.
Curious to hear from the OP if they have the switch.

I'm watching MultiView right now on two different Hopper 3's that are both connected to a DPH42. I also have it on another Hopper 3 that is connected to a Hybrid LNB.

I am on Western Arc and have a DPH42 switch for my 2 Hopper3 receivers. MultiView works well for me even with SD channels in the top 2 quadrants. Western Arc uses mpeg 2 for SD and mpeg 4 for HD. Eastern Arc only uses mpeg 4. I wonder if that is causing the problem that J Sheridan has found.

From what the DISH software folks tell me the problem is only on the eastern arc so your explanation sounds very reasonable. :)

strange, haven't used the 4 pip; in a long time, tried it after seeing this. H3 rebooted after the tv lost signal, mode not available, or something.
after the reboot it worked just fine.

If you have a 4K TV and is connected with HDMI to the Hopper 3 then the output will switch to 4K when you engage MultiView. That's probably what was happening and it needed to reboot to switch to 4K mode.
