Where our wheels go
"Before today you could get DIRECTV for $49.99 (plus fees and taxes) for a 12-month introductory offer. Now AT&T has announced that starting today DIRECTV’s basic Select package will be going up to $59.99 a month as an introductory offer good for 12 months. This is the second DIRECTV price hike in less than a year."

"Update: AT&T says that current subscribers will not be affected by this change. Only new customers will be paying more starting today."

This isn't a Price increase, it's a package price change.
They can change packages all they want, they are not raising the current sub with that package price.

So the package that was $49.95 yesterday for new subscribers and is $59.95 to day for new subscribers is NOT a price increase? Must be that new math... :)

Would you have felt better had they just changed the name and said that new Name package was $59 ?

Also, remember, this is NOT DIRECTV, D* raised prices 1 time a year.
Streaming appears to be much different.

Also, most of the Streaming services have raised prices when ever they seem fit, trying to place the value (?) in the right price range.

So what?

I have to shake my head over stuff like this. Contrary to what many think, ATT management knows what it's doing. I'm going to guess that they've looked at what happens to subs that take these ridiculously low intro offers and have seen that many bolt as soon as the contract is up.

By raising intro rates, they increase revenue for new customers, avoid money-losing customers, and minimize sticker shock when intro rates expire.

These things do not affect current subs at all.

package base price is unchanged
the subsidy directv gave you for becoming a customer has dropped

the ceo did say he wanted to get rid of people that wanted free stuff

i say get rid of all introductory pricing, and lower everyones bill by $5 or $10

Are you sure about that? "DIRECTV SELECT™" sure looks like a satellite package to me...

DIRECTV Select Package - 155+ Channels - $35/mo.

If they were not subscribers yesterday but joined today then the price didn't go up for them, thats the price they started with. :D

sales dont last forever
i saw a lawn mower on sale, didnt make it in store until next day
it cost me more due to not being on time

Here's an intersting article about their streaming service...it mentions plans to replace directtv...and how acquisition costs are about half of a standard uverse or directv customer

so you wanna replace something that covers 1005 of the country, with something that covers 85%

just give up that 15% that has much less competition?

sure why not

There is a brief mention that it EVENTUALLY plans to replace Directv. That EVENTUALLY could be 10-15 years from now. People are really reaching here
