Saying Dish is DirecTV's only competitor is insane. And to use an estimated stat like 15% 'have no choice' but satellite actually hurts your argument.

Using the 15% figure (you'd need to prove that to me, btw) means that 85% of the country has other options. Dozens of other options. No way is Dish DirecTV's only competitor. All you have to ask yourself is one question:

Do all of the subs that leave DirecTV move to Dish? No, they do not. Not by a long shot. When I have contemplated leaving DirecTV, I haven't once considered Dish. I've always looked at cord cutting options instead.

As I said at the top, AT&T is competing with itself to keep their subs. If their DVR's were bug free, and their CS was top notch, many subs leaving now would stay. You would also notice that the number of posts here would drop by at least half, if not more.

I remember when we couldn't wait for new software coming to our DVR's. It seemed like 1 in 20 posts were folks asking 'how do I force an update?'. When was the last time you saw someone ask that question? You know why? Because we dread updates now.

One last time - AT&T is killing itself - folks don't leave because Dish is better - they leave cable/satellite all together.

Dish cares about talking remotes and Alexa crap. That is so dumb. Give me a unit that does 4k properly and we can talk about new receivers. Otherwise, bring back the little things that we have lost - like the markers on recorded programs so you can mark a spot in a program that you are not stopping it at (what the yellow button used to do), sorting the playlist how you want, native mode for those who want it, and those things. I don't need my receiver to play radio stations or connect to apps. Just make it work. Just give me full HD programming with good picture and sound.

Nobody cares about the dam Hopper.

If the Hopper was really that great, people would be leaving their current Tv provider in groves and switching to Dish.

Dish has been loosing customers, NOT GAINING.

People care about their channels and their price. DVR, for most people is an after thought.

ATT is NOT killing itself. This whole thing has me laughing. ATT management knows exactly what it's doing. The company, on the whole, is a money machine.

So what if they're losing DTV subs? They know who they're making money on and who they're not. If a low margin customer calls to cancel, they're more than happy to let them go. They're not going to lose money just to keep the number of subs up. This is a new, bottom line approach and I expect it to spread more and more through the entire industry. ATT is well-positioned going forward for streaming and I suspect 5G is going to be a big part of that in a few years.

I agree.

I was speaking with one of the executive VP’s at Dish about 10 years ago and they said Charlie predicted this exact same thing would happen.

It would get to the point where they would stop focusing on acquiring new customers and would focus on the customers they already had.

They would let the low paying customers go, stop giving away discounts and focus on the high value customers.

Charlie also said when this would happen the company would be more profitable than ever before.

A lot of you say that AT&T Is imploding because they have stopped handing out discounts and cut down on the offers, but when you look at it, this is exactly what is happening.

Unless Dish actually does something with their 5g besides what’s on paper, they are in a pretty bad position.

The whole industry is moving towards providing internet and wireless.

I think a lot of people are just upset they can't keep playing the game of calling up Directv, threatening to leave, and getting big fat discounts for another year.

Sort of an element of "if AT&T won't kiss my ass I think they'll fail because I wish they would since it'll make me feel better"
