Directv might drop the NFL Sunday Ticket

How many business, casinos , restaurants etc

There are a lot of possible iterations between the current exclusive deal and not carrying it at all. They might maintain the exclusive for commercial, or maintain the exclusive for cable/satellite and someone else streams it (and current no one licenses streaming for commercial use and it is a lot less practical for a place with dozens of TVs to stream) so I doubt it will affect their stranglehold on the commercial market.

I just can't see DTV not having NFL ST, they're the inly one, besides DISH, that can be anywhere, if the NFL opted for a cable provider, they'd have so many choices, for instance, Spectrum here in my part of NY, but no Xfinity/Comcast, so they'd be alienating so many fans. Plus didn't ATT say they wanted DTV only if they got NFL ST secured? Why go back on that?

When they said that, DTV was peaking. Then my fellow bean counters took over. I think it has been well established that the ST is a loss leader for them. That was used to pull in custies that would subscribe to profitable plans. They appear to be projecting that the trade off will no longer be worthwhile when renewal rolls around. At best, I see them keeping it on a non exclusive basis.

Can't AT&T just say to the NFL, "look we won't pay as much as you are asking for but good luck trying to find another provider that can do what we do."
IF that happened, the NFL would open it up to everyone as well as streaming ... and still charge the same ridiculous price for it.

OR Amazon Prime might be a likely company to step up and make an offer.

And at that point, the NFL may say OK, your (att) not getting it for this contract, and that would be real bad for att, they need the ST more than they are letting on.
They don't need it exclusive (but would be nice to continue) but they do need it.

I don’t understand why AT&T can’t offer a streaming option for the package, without having to have a satellite subscription?

you’re looking at having 10 channels max dedicated for NFL Sunday Ticket
If the local cable has SDV then it's no real issue to have NFL 1-14 GAME 1-18 TEAM 1-10 live all the time.

if the local cable can mix the feeds to skip the feeds that locals have. Say SUB in NFL 12 to NFL 1 as there system may only have NFL 1-10 as slots. (what did rogers do with super sports pack?)

TO BAD THAT comcast does not have SDV so they can't have NFL 1-13 live all time.

That's basically what they are doing by stating now that they won't agree to any price increase above what NFLST costs them currently.

The problem isn't finding another provider that can do what they do - no provider can do what Directv does for NFLST but a provider + streaming or multiple providers can. The question is whether the NFL can sell non exclusive access to multiple providers for more money than they could sell exclusive access to AT&T again. We'll see I guess.

Fingers crossed the NFL drops them and gives that awful soon to be extent dinosaur company the heave-ho. If it were my business (NFL), One of the big IT companies like Amazon, Alphabet or both makes the most sense because they have the pay services and ability to already reach most everyone even beyond our shores. If they want to expand the NFL instead of doing those silly games abroad bring it right into the people's homes. Not only would the NFL popularity explode the people could subscribe without the 2-year commitment and bulky equipment.

NFL popularity will never happen overseas, they are wasting their time trying to make it happen. The people attending those games are Americans who live overseas.

It is much more likely soccer will overtake the NFL in the US in 30 years than the NFL becoming popular in Europe. Just look at how many kids are playing soccer now, and the drop in boys' participation in football. NFL is probably at its peak now, there is nowhere to go but down.

The three way bidding war between google, Amazon, and Disney, along with a few dark horses like dazn, pretty much means this thing will be pushed into the billions, while at&t is struggling with having to pay the half billion.

There will be no “bidding war”. Because no one other than a traditional linear provider would bid one cent more than what it can make from selling subscriptions.

DirecTV pays more for NFLST than it sells in NFLST subscriptions, because NFLST subscribers also buy other programming from it.

However so-called “cord cutting” does not work that way. It is all about “a la carte” and all of that. So why would Netflix or whoever pay the NFL one cent more than it can recoup in actual subscriptions. Either it offers NFLST in base Netflix, which prices Netflix out of the range of most people who do not want NFLST, or it sells it stand alone, in which it can only make what it makes.

The NFL has priced itself out of existence. We are only waiting for the corpse to rot.

REDSKIN tickets go for around $167. Some other team tickets go for a multiple of that. What’s a soda or beer or hot dog go for?

ESPN’s financial troubles are just the start. Did Disney get them to cut costs enough? HA!

That was my thinking when I said a possible scenario is Directv keeps it exclusive for non streaming for less money, and someone like Amazon gets it exclusively for streaming. Unless the NFL finds it better to widely distribute it for much less per provider, I think it has to stay at least semi exclusive to be a draw for someone to have it.
Further it doesn't seem to work for a Cable company to have exclusive, none are widely available everywhere so that limits the possibilities. I don't think DISH would be interested at whatever the cost would be so it would seem the best landing spots would be Directv, and Amazon, possibly Youtube. If At&t really wants out of Directv and/or that business is dragging them down perhaps they do not want that kind of big money contract.

It would be no different than the NHL, NBA, MLB and MLS packages. Negotiations would be most likely be done through iNDemand, which is equally owned by Comcast, Charter and Cox. In addition to the big three, smaller operations like Altice, Wow, RCN and Verizon and Frontier Fios have contracts with iNDemand. If they were to get NFL ST, it would open it up to probably 95%+ of all cable TV subscribers.

and will comcast do SDV to fit it in? rush X1 out to business tv?

The Death Star would be stupid to drop Sunday Ticket. Do they want to lose even more subscribers? I was in disbelief at first, but considering how Death Star is, they’ll probably give it up.
