Latest osmio4k issues

As a side benefit to the community from the TNAP image development, El Bandidio has posted a driver replacement file and install process at the legitFTA forum. This driver should allow kernel 5.3 based images to correctly blind scan and log the 4MHz TPs and services.

This driver does disable T2MI and should be considered an interm solution for those not requiring T2MI reception. At this point, T2MI services are not typically fond on any satellites West of 40.5w, so this temporary fix will benefit most North American E2 users. For T2MI testing, simply multiboot to an image using the standard driver.

BTW, I have been in communication with AVL and provided them with information on the matter. They only officially work with manufacturers on driver development, so will have to see if and how they address this so we can have both accurate blind scan / service logging and T2MI. Also, Edision has provided great assistance and test drivers for our testing and has been working with
AVL on a solution.

How do i know what driver i have? Thank you for all your work. -Tony

So the Availink drivers for the OS Mio / Mio+ are proprietary and closed source? Part of the appeal of the Mio+ (at least to me) would be to have the ability to adapt it to my needs. Without driver source code I couldn't accomplish that.

That is my understanding. I searched for source code for the H7 tuners. Many other STB's use the same tuner/demod that it does. No dice.
IF Edision has the source code for the tuner(s) it would be buried in piles of non disclosure agreements. Same for anything Broadcom, etc.
Although there are devices out there (Android, wifi, etc) where the source is available and dev's are encouraged to make cool things happen. Not so here.
And that's funny because Linux is supposed to be open source. What's more hilarious is if the manufacturers aren't willing to take time to fix deficiencies why not release the code so those who do have time can. Or at least try.

Not surprising that it's closed source. Most of the hardware that I've been buying of late has closed source drivers. For example, the radios in my Linksys routers (running dd-wrt - linux based firmware) are using proprietary drivers and it looks like development has stopped on those drivers which means that the problems won't be fixed (such as the 5 GHz radio not working properly after a firmware upgrade or reboot) and some of the features will never be implemented (such as mu-mimo). I hope that the osmio 4k firmware will add the 5 GHz radio feature and fix the bug with services like Decades and Heroes. Despite these bugs and the learning curve, I like the osmio 4k.

Heh, I just tried to register at LegitFTA and got a 50X error message. MAYBE I'll try to register again later.

Only applies if running an image running kernel 5.3.0 How do you know if your image is running Kernel 5.3.0? Example if TNAP image:
Menu>>> Information>>> About>>>

If running kernel 5.3.0: Telnet / FTP the receiver path: /lib/modules/5.3.0/extra . If current image, likely driver file avl6261.ko is installed. This driver provides T2MI support, but limited to > 4MHz blind scan TP / service logging.

Unfortunately it is very rare for manufacturers to release the full source code for their devices (including driver source). As noted by johnnynobody , Linksys was a rare exception -- especially with their WRT54G router. Many years ago I had one and had a blast experimenting with it and using it for various projects. They sold quite a few WRT54G routers!

While not everyone is able to write code or modify device drivers, those few that can often increase the product's useful lifespan -- long after the manufacturer has dropped support and moved on to their next big thing.

Is there a satellite STB with driver source code available? The only ones I know of are TBS cards, but I would like to see it in a set top box.

Finally got around to determining if I can get the osmio 4k to work on 5 GHz if the wireless utility doesn't give you the option. Just telnet into the router and edit the /etc/wpa_supplicant.wlan#.conf file with the parameters and reboot. Worked for me. I've learned a lot about Linux but if you don't use it on a regular basis you lose it and have to figure it out again. Anyway, my router diagnostics screen shows it's an 866 Mb connection using VHT80. The router is capable of 2.6 Gb using VHT160. My network is composed of 4 WRT3200ACM routers in a WDS configuration.

I still can't get to legitFTA. I get the same error no matter which browser I use. The error I keep getting is : A 50X error occurred.

I know this sucks but seems typical with sat receiver manufacturers these days.
It seems they pass the buck, so to speak. Edision is supposed to speak with the tuner chip manufacturer.
Edision says they don't develop drivers and drivers are supplied by the chipset manufacturers.
The chipset guys in China did their work and don't deem it fit to fix anything.
And released actual drivers with no source code give us what we have and nothing more.
Not griping. Not one bit. But from years of industrial electronics hands on with machinery costing over 6 digits and periodic software maintenance contracts costing 5 digits per machine. If something doesn't work as it should, you can darned well expect the CEO paying the bills has tips of shoes not so shiny anymore.
If contacting AVL does no good and the same with Edision (and others) results in the same. What's the end consumer to do once they discover the 'oopsies' of a brand new next-best-thing?

From and email response from Edision:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting EDISION.

EDISION is not responsible for the software of our LINUX receivers and it's completely open source and is generated by third-party teams, so please search in different forums such as openatv, openpli.

I lived in Greece as a teen when my dad was in the USAF. And believe me. The rather....(whats the word?)....flippant response is quite typical. Don't like Pepsi? Try Ouzo! Kalispera Kyrios!

I'm working with AVL on some tuner enhancements for the Mio/Mio+. Edision has been working with AVL on a driver improvement for the Mio/Mio+. AVL tuners have always been closed source code, but it is the premier tuner for FTA and they historically work with manufacturers and STB developers. I have used AVL tuners on several projects that I developed.

No, Edision does not provide the open Source Enigma2 distros. Is there something specific that you need that an image group has not been able to assist? Sounds like you may have reached out to Edision for an issue that is image vs hardware related?

No sir. No image issues whatsoever. Although there may be many things the OS Mio may be good for, I'm using it solely as a satellite receiver.
If you have direct contact with AVL. Awesome! If they actually do something with drivers, more awesome!! lol.

I know you're a ham also. I'm positive if Yaesu or ICOM made a sat receiver there would be very little a person would want for.
Familiar with SDR? Sure you are. Most amateur radios these days use SDR instead of layers of semiconductors.
And software that runs them is tweaked almost to perfection. That I'm sure of.
And if not, they are doing something about it.
Of course they also have custom chipsets made by them largely.
Nothing like these receiver manufacturers that go to the supermarket and fill a cart with groceries after reading a recipe book.
Sort of....

Anyway. As I see with receivers such as VU+ and Dreamboxes. At the very least you can freely swap tuners.
In other words, a $200+ box doesn't actually get obsoleted just because the dev's got lazy and stagnant and make a new one that is "supposed to be" superior to the last one.
Again. Sort of. I'm being realistic here. But in my opinion. Honest also.

I'm sure the USA market for receivers like these are not as prominent as Europe, etc.
But to satisfy it you would have at least thought Edision would have made an option for an ATSC/Cable tuner.
Looking back at the H7.XX receivers. The terrestrial tuner chip in it is shared with set top ATSC tuners made from other vendors with embedded firmware. Yet, forget about using an H7 to receive anything here OTA or with ITC cable. Let alone the sat tuner never able to blindscan. But after the money is made selling them. Who cares?...we'll just slap another model out there.
Flood the market with what they can do but don't publish (or fudge) what they cannot do.
I do really appreciate your honesty the day I was ready to grab one of those brand new +'s off of you.

From their website it looks like they (edision) have models that cover every other spectrum.
People like AVL would lose not one thing by releasing source code. Considering that they may not really care if a fifty-nine cent chip works well or not. But since Linux is a programmers dream, perhaps others could make them sing.

You being in touch with AVL alone tells me you give a you-know-what. But Edision's response to me tells me they advertised steak. And that steak turned out to be liver. It's "steak" for real....but liver steak. And I hate liver.
Keep up the good work!

Johnny, have you tried Legitfta on a pc that's NOT running Linux? I haven't heard of that error often, but when I have, it always seems to be related to Linux in some way.

Just throwing that out there, as I don't know for sure.

Didn't make any difference using Firefox 70.0.1 on Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10. There are other browsers that I could try but it is my opinion that web site developers shouldn't optimize their website for just one browser, anyway. I did did send a message to the admin to see what they say though.
