AppleTV 4K = $90!

No real need for an Apple TV now since they have an Apple TV app for most popular streaming boxes.

My Apple TV box is the box I use the least. (Nvidia Shield and AirTV boxes get the most use as well as the Roku built into my TV)

That was my thinking when the Apple Tv app came out as well. I assume the main draw of the box itself is the slick operation? Maybe it has other capabilities that you cant get with the App?

Speaking of the shield, I did pick up one of the 2019 models a couple of days ago. Pretty nice device, and runs Android Tv nicely.

You can do more than just watch TV and movies on Apple TV you can also play games, listen to music and view photos.

Besides running apple apps, the Apple TV app itself runs identically as it does on the Apple TV. If you went from one device (say running on a Shield) then to an Apple TV the experience would be the same. (Again without the other apps you can download to the Apple TV)

Its one of the best (if not THE best) Android TV box on the market. I have two of them, one at home and one at the office. Great devices!

I've found the Apple TV 4k the most reliable for providing Atmos content for Netflix and Amazon compared to apps installed on other devices.

Yep, it does well for those with Atmos setups. Its also very quick in operation and more trouble free than some.

For info, the deal is over as all are sold out

I noticed that when I activated AppleTV+ on my iphone 11 Pro Max, my Denon Receiver was listed. When I checked it off it turned on my entire Home Theater system like I do with Home Theater Remote control. It set the Denon Receiver to AppleTV+ and whatever I selected on my iphone was playing in my Home Theater room. But it did not play the video just the audio. Quality wasn't all that great. But here is what the projector screen showed:

This is just a thumbnail of what I selected to play on my iphone11. It's not the full video. I always could connect an HDMI adapter to my iphone and play iphone content in the Home Theater. But this AppleTV+ actually took complete control of my entire Home Theater but only the program sound.

You’re just AirPlaying your program to your Denon HT, just like an AirPlay speaker. I think you’re far enough down the Apple rabbit hole to get the Apple TV 4K and make it worthwhile.

I’m sure your grandkids would thank you, too…

I don't know what Apple TV 4K can do that my current IP TV selection does through my UHD Samsung player. Convince me!

Most of my IPTV watching is Netflix, You Tube, Amazon Prime, Showtime, RedBull, 3D Network, VUDU and a few others.

I don't know if Disney will have an app on the Samsung or not yet but that may be something worth considering.

Faster operation, better and longer updated app support, and although I’m not sure what apps Apple offers with their player, general app selection is better with most dedicated streaming devices.

Honestly, the ease of usage and better overall performance of a dedicated streamer is enough for my personal reasons for a box (not necessarily the Apple TV).

Well got an e-mail from AT&T this morning saying my order was cancelled, reason "This item flew off our shelves and isn't available anymore.". Guess AT&T's inventory management system is as good as their billing systems (both suck), why take the order if they didn't have the stock to back it up?

I went ahead and bought the Apple TV puck 64GB 4K version and got it installed in my HT system. Only disappointment was the remote is BT or some form of RF that is not compatible with my home theater programmable remote. It's small enough to stick it to my main remote control with a couple velcro tags. We'll see over time if that works. Performance of the Remote control is a bit sluggish at times.

The output was not at first very good quality but I was able to process the video to calibrate the various modes, HDR vs SDR and BT2020 vs BT709 and now the image looks great.

My old Samsung K8500 has more apps but does not have AppleTV+, Disney, Hulu+ or the old cable channels with internet presence. The Apple TV box does the job that Samsung doesn't, only redundant for Netflix and Amazon.

You probably would have been fine with the 32 GB version. 64 GB is only if you need the extra storage for Apps (especially the Game Apps). The Remote Control takes some getting used to (I went in to settings and slowed it down a bit) but you should also be able to control your Apple TV with your iPhone and Watch. The Screen Savers are a nice touch.

Like the iPhone and iPad, you can group Apps into folders and also hide the built-in Apps that you never use. You can use the microphone button on the remote to have Siri open one of the Apps hidden in a Folder if you need it but can't remember what folder you hid it in. You can rearrange the Apps by a long-press and then slide them to where you want.

If you have a new enough Mac, you can use AirPlay to mirror your Mac's desktop to the Apple TV, or use it as a second 4K screen. Likewise, you can use AirPlay to mirror your iPad or iPhone to the Apple TV with varying results (some Apps don't like to share!)

The YouTube app is as bleh on the Apple TV as it is on most any other platform. No 4K YouTube video support, either. But the 4K using AppleTV+ will give your download speeds a workout.

If you have any HomeKit devices, they can now use the Apple TV as their Hub instead of an iPad. Since the AppleTV 4K is usually powered up or in Standby all the time, I've found it's more stable with my few items.

If you set up CEC and your Home Theater supports it, you should be able to navigate on your AppleTV by using the arrow keys on your Projector or AVR remote. The Apple TV can cause your TV and receiver to power up and switch to the appropriate input if CEC is working and supported. Also, if you're watching via the Apple TV and you want to shut everything off, press and hold the TV button (the one with the TV icon) and it brings up an option panel from the right. Press the touchpad and the Apple TV gos into standby and powers off the CEC-enabled connected equipment.

And if nothing else, you get a free year of AppleTV+ with your purchase. Just make sure the young ones aren't visiting if you sample "The Morning Show", "See", or "For All Mankind" The language is most un-Apple which I guess is necessary for any new streaming service nowadays.
