    Is AT&T gutting DIRECTV?

It's a click of a button on a web site or app. It's not like the days of being forced to call up DTV and barter with the CSR to let you cancel HBO, and having to listen to 3 or 4 other offers before they'd finally process your cancellation. (and being hit with downgrade fees in some cases)

    Is AT&T gutting DIRECTV?

If we’re talking about taking live TV and mapping it straight to Internet delivery, I agree there are all kinds of problems with scaling the infrastructure to meet that kind of demand. Things continue to improve, and even HBO Go/NOW was able to keep up with Game of Thrones demand this year...

That’s it! I’m leaving Dish when my contact’s up and returning to DirecTV.

Good luck. Even retentions couldn’t move my service address back in the RC1 system when I tried to do it prior to cancelling. Luckily you can just drop off hardware at UPS or FedEx now, and they no longer send out recovery boxes. ATT merged in 2 steps, the first step was moving logins to...

That’s it! I’m leaving Dish when my contact’s up and returning to DirecTV.

Exactly. Only PERMANENT service address changes that come with a 2 year contract renewal and a tech visit. A tech has to show up and sign off on the new install address on site. Existing accounts were migrated to the new system and given a new account number...

That’s it! I’m leaving Dish when my contact’s up and returning to DirecTV.

I’ve done that several times over the years as well. It’s gone away since they started migrating accounts out of the old DIRECTV billing system into the ATT billing system. It’s impossible in the new system to update the service address without generating a work order.

That’s it! I’m leaving Dish when my contact’s up and returning to DirecTV.

You can’t change the service address without a tech visit once the account is in the ATT billing system.

Directv might drop the NFL Sunday Ticket

I don't understand the unforced errors that ATT keeps taking. Your customers can read these quotes. You're telling them that you don't feel this service you offer is important to your business going forward. You might as well hang a sign that says "Hey ATT customers (suckers!), we don't...

Pay it with a credit card you never use. Discover, US Bank, and a few others will just cancel your amount owed on your credit card statement if it's under $1.

DirecTV Q1 2019 Results - 627,000 Net Loss Subs (DirecTV & Directv Now)

They don’t have to worry about that until a couple decades from now when DirecTV 14 (2014 launch), DirecTV 15 (2015 launch), and DirecTV 16 (launching this year) start to approach the end of their service life.

They've farmed most of the actual video serving out to Akamai. This happens with servers that are installed all around the world, including in data centers close to where your ISP central office is located (maybe even in the ISP central office itself). For scale, let's use a Backblaze storage...

Let's throw some numbers at this: From the Netflix 2018 10-K annual SEC filing (Document page 22): Technology and development expenses consist of payroll and related expenses for all technology personnel, as well as other costs incurred in making improvements to our service offerings...

For every calculation, I tried to error on the side that would be favorable to streaming costs. Viewership numbers, in particular, are hard -- which is why I stuck with the average. My gut feeling is that commercial accounts would skew the numbers way up, from small doctors offices that have...

I'm also interested to see ncted's updated numbers on this. I took a stab at the numbers a little over 2 years ago, I found financial costs from the last DirecTV financial statement that line up pretty well with the satellite distribution costs you outline above: DIRECTV NOW LAUNCH

To increase subscribers so they can grow the stock price. Traditional video providers have been around for a long time, they're well established. The business appeal of streaming services is that you can reach consumers who would otherwise not purchase your product, and you can use that as a...

DirecTV satellite receivers have Internet connections for on-demand. Since they control that entire platform, they could have the receivers run connection tests and use that data to select beta participants. The reason DTVN subscribers make great beta candidates is that they have demonstrated...

After 18 years it’s time to Say Goodbye D*

When you get to companies the size of DirecT&T/Warner, it's sadly not all that uncommon for senior management to get out of sync with the technical capabilities of their organization. I think it's easier to sell that as being the future when we can stop being excited about "record breaking"...

I believe that number was at least partially derived from what was disclosed in pre-merger DirecTV financial reports as part of the broadcast operations expenses, defined as: These expenses include broadcast center operating costs, signal transmission expenses (including costs of collecting...

    4K Programs

It’s something in between. It’s not a QAM delivered channel, like most of their other content. It’s restricted to customers using their X1 platform receivers, and it is delivered using their DOCSIS IP network with its own QoS queue similar to Xfinity Voice. It isn’t Internet streaming -...

    been thinking

If you started when they had those handful of channels, you also needed to do a receiver swap once they really started cranking things up because they moved from MPEG2 to MPEG4. That was kind of my point about this being the wrong time to jump in on 4k broadcast hardware. The current 4k...

    been thinking

Even if 50% of deployed TVs were 4k capable, the problem is where the content is being produced. Youtube is rich with 4k content because flagship smartphones and action cameras like GoPro have been able to shoot in 4k for the last few years. So you have a strong starting base there on top of...

Strange. We downgraded to Entertainment in July, and the channels they added back (RSN, Travel Channel, a few others) are still there today.
