    Thinking About Upgrading Subwoofer

Subwoofer spikes, on a downward-firing sub? ;D (just poking fun at the critics of such a design) :D

While we are discussing subs (port aiming/distance discussion)

Whoa, there. Sound engineering is above me. I think experimentation is in order. :D

Pics of the system after adding the Sub-12 and Denon AVR-1909

It would be pretty easy to cut MDF to size, grab some cheap car audio speaker box carpet and spray adhesive, and throw some foam "stands" on the bottom like that Auralex stuff.

Pics of the system after adding the Sub-12 and Denon AVR-1909

I used 18" square travertine stone tile for my kitchen counters from Home Depot. Can't find it on their website (a lot of things are in their stores and not online, though), but I can't help thinking that might work. Only thing I can think is that stone might be too thin if used under a sub...

I'm curious how it sounds then. :) Plywood is definitely a pretty cheap way to go. All I can say is whatever you think works best, IS best! :D An article I found interesting on spike/cone use: Speaker Spikes and Cones – What’s the point? — Reviews and News from Audioholics From...

Pics of the system after adding the Sub-12 and Denon AVR-1909

I'm not qualified to explain it I think, but it has to do with carpet absorbing a lot of the sound. I just know first-hand that it works. :D

Pics of the system after adding the Sub-12 and Denon AVR-1909

Lemme show you some pictures of my roommate's gear. The spikes go through the carpet to the solid subfloor for the most efficient bass and sound possible. All the speakers in my house use spikes. The difference is noticeable to the trained ear. :) Either way, is sounds like you really...

Pics of the system after adding the Sub-12 and Denon AVR-1909

Not an issue of walking as much as sound quality. "By rigidly coupling a loudspeaker enclosure to a floor by means of a "spiking" system, it is possible to dramatically improve clarity, stereo imaging and tighten up the bass response. This is particularly effective on flimsy flooring and thick...

    Is this a good combo?

B&H actually has a huge store in New York, if you want to split hairs with CC. They are authorized to sell a lot of electronics. I always forget to include shipping, so good point. Either way, I do have an older Sony 5.1 receiver and I still use it around the house even though I've upgraded...

Sony 5300 runs hot - Protection kicking in

Glad to hear it's working out! I've got a pair of Paradigm Studio 60's (little older), and they are NICE. They've been properly broken in by one of my good A/V buddies and I use external amplification for 'em. I'd put them up against any other speaker you can buy for under $3000, they sound...

need advice on mid/upper level sats?

Definitive Technology speakers to VERY much overrated and overpriced. Focal makes an excellent speaker, but I can't say I know anything about the SiB. Honestly, if you want great sounding speakers on the cheap, I'd recommend building your own: Search Results Page Or look into this: Search...
