New to Blu-Ray; Just got Panasonic BD30 & have a question...

Thanks. I'll keep this in mind. So far, I haven't run into this option on the few BD discs I've watched. They've only had the typical "Dolby Digital 5.1" and "Dolby English" options, or something like that.

New to Blu-Ray; Just got Panasonic BD30 & have a question...

Are you referring to such options on the disc itself or the BD30 player? I thought I set up uncompressed PCM as default on the player, but I obviously could be mistaken.

New to Blu-Ray; Just got Panasonic BD30 & have a question...

Teach, yes, the TV itself, a Samsung 6189S, is all set as well. It's been calibrated fine. FWIW, I've also got connected an HR20-700 and HR10-250 (DirecTV receivers), so all I had to do was connect the BD30 via an HDMI cable. I have noticed that on some movies, Italian Job, for example, the...

New to Blu-Ray; Just got Panasonic BD30 & have a question...

Well, after being someone who has some pretty top notch HD stuff, I finally broke down and got rid of my last SD device, my DVD player, and got the Panasonic BD30 that just came out. Even upgraded to the latest firmware that also just came out a few days ago. So, as someone new to Blu-Ray, I've...

    Panasonic BD30 Update

Considering i just got mine last week, this is good timing. I did notice that as of a few days ago, there wasn't any firmware available for the BD30, so I take it this is just off the presses so to speak.

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

    Apology accepted, navychop.

Actually, the darker result is expected. When one toggles over the "movie" mode, the explanation on the bottom of the screen states that the screen becomes darker to simulate a movie theater environment.

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

Yes, I know. I didn't say it didn't; rather, I said the HDMI "through" option is not available on the 805. It is available on the 875.

That's similar to what the Panasonic rep. told me. He looked on line on Sammy's web site and looked up the detailed specs, which is where he found the info about 3-2 pulldown and other details that told him it wouldn't support 1080p/24 video.

Just to add, the Onkyo 805 doesn't have the ability to set HDMI Out to "through." The 875 does, but apparently the 805 does not. I tried doing that but it's not even an option.

As he explained, the Sammy HLT6189S does "3-2 pulldown," and as such, cannot support 24p BD-Video output. Changing the mode on my Sammy from Dynamic to Movie does nothing (except for making the overall screen darker, which I don't like anyway).

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

Well, got the BD30 all connected, and everything's fine except for one issue: the unit will NOT let me turn the BD-Video 24p output to "on." That's grayed out with the "off" option being the only thing available. Now, my Samsung TV does support 1080p; the HDMI resolution is set to auto, and the...

Ordered the Panasonic BD30 and will pick it up Thursday from Circuit City after work. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

I had forgotten about that until well after I posted my concern, which is moot now. It does appear that the 805 automatically decodes it then, correct? I don't have to adjust anything on my Onkyo, right?

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

I don't have a bias, per se; rather, I just don't want a gaming unit. Overall, the Panasonic BD30 appears to be better anyway. If I'm ever going to get a game system (like I have the time for THAT!), it'd probably be a Wii anyway.

I must admit that this post in the AVS forum concerns me:

Thanks. I think after further research I'm now leaning toward the DMP-BD30. :)

How would you compare it to the Sony BDP-S500, though?

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

I've got an Onkyo 805 A/V, so I'm not worried about the sound source. :D So why do you believe the BD30 is better than the Sony? Is it better than the Sony BDP-S500? That one's really nice, and if I can get my buddy at ABT Electronics to drop its price down to $500-$525 or so, I'd buy it.

Decisions, decisions: which Blu-Ray player to buy?

While I'm not taking an actual poll, I'm looking for comments/suggestions from people as to which of the following DVD players I'm considering might be the best to eventually buy: * Sony BDP-S300 * Sony BDP-S301 * Samsung BD-P1400 * Sony BDP-S500 (I listed this a bit separately because its...
