You can select a movie, then elect to "Watch Later" :D The movie will download in the background while you watch TV/the TV is off, and you can go to my rentals to start playing it when you're ready (my rentals is in the "all movies" menu)

Most likely, the receiver was not reading your internet connection. Resetting it probably did the trick

Instead of going to BBMP in the DVR menu, go to all movies. In all movies, there is a search option that searches all of the content (including BBMP). When doing this, you'll want to make sure it doesn't have a charge for the movie
