    AM at low power

For the past week KWML has been at full power both day and night. I suspect that AM stations have an automated system to turn the power down at sunset and up at sunrise. That may be "stuck". I see on radio-locator that the closest other 570 is in Dallas and that they only have to turn the...

    AM at low power

I go to Las Cruces quite often. I may just stop by KWML offices if this does not improve. Yes, I am thinking about digital / wifi radio alternatives. If I have to resort to that I may as well listen to some stations further away. Tucson has a very professional Oldies station on 830 AM as...

    AM at low power

I should clarify: KWML is running at the same low power 24 hours a day. When the sun comes up I hear no sudden increase in reception. When I was a kid in Florida I loved to listen to my radio at night. I could always pick up New Orleans, Chicago and sometimes New York City.

    AM at low power

My favorite radio station, KWML AM 570 is about 60 miles away but at its daytime power of 5,000 watts I receive it quite well. However, for the past couple of weeks I believe they are leaving it at the nighttime power of 155 watts. I can just barely hear it. They have a 215 watt FM translator...

    Local radio performance fees

I am surprised there are not more Classical Music stations then. Virtually all of the composers are dead.

What more creative talk in radio would you take if given a chance?

I will second the above sentiment that a wide variety mix of music would be more interesting than all of these very tightly programmed radio stations that are available today. Also, most radio stations stick to the very most popular titles of their genre. I like classic rock but sometimes think...

    LP-AM

This is very interesting although in today's environment I doubt it will ever be used beyond the current road information and such. I had previously done some research on the subject due to my fond memories of the college radio station we had at New Mexico State in the early 1970's. At the...

    [Texas] 1060 AM El Paso

They have been off again for a couple of days. Although radiolocator.com shows 1060 as KXPL, I really think they are saying KXEL. I also get the idea that it is a relay of another station in Mexico, possibly something Santiago. I asked a Spanish speaking friend to listen to 1060 but just then...

    [Texas] 1060 AM El Paso

We have an interesting "new" station here in the El Paso area. It has been Spanish for as long as I can remember but now is playing a very wide variety of English language music from the 60's to present day. I am even hearing dance and alternative rock versions from 12 inch singles. The only...

[Texas] Dallas-Fort Worth's KDGE loses it Edge after 27 years.

Is there enough modern rock being produced to support a full time radio format? On a recent trip to California I listened to KROQ for a while but must admit that I am so out of touch that I could not tell you if it was all new music or ten years old. I actually switched over to the HD-02...

[Texas] Dallas-Fort Worth's KDGE loses it Edge after 27 years.

It is always interesting to see these radio formats switch from one station to another. Every time I go to Albuquerque it seems several have switched around. Unfortunately, there is really nothing new, oldies move to the spot previously held by country, etc. Here in El Paso, the formats seem...

    New S. NM Radio station

I had a chance to drive up to Las Cruces yesterday and was able to hear KWML on their FM translator. From the fringe reception pattern I believe they have completed their construction permit and are now transmitting at 215 watts and 261 feet out by the Rio Grande river. I was concerned as they...

    New S. NM Radio station

Here is another one! KKBE 910 AM in Roswell, NM (everyone has heard of Roswell )! Again as KBIM it used to be the 5000 watt top 40 station for SE New Mexico. They also have floundered, trying talk, sports, etc. Since they added a low power FM translator they tried to compete with the other...

    New S. NM Radio station

No, I do not know where the music originates. It is traditional oldies from the 60's and 70's with a station promo in between each song. So far, the only commercials have been in the way of public service. Yes, I am very glad to see music return to AM. In expansive Southern New Mexico and far...

    New S. NM Radio station

I thought I would post something here before this thread dies off completely. This morning I discovered that KWML 570 in Las Cruces, NM has once again changed their format. They are now "oldies" which does appeal to me. I can remember a time when they were the powerhouse top 40 station in...

[Massachusetts] What's up with Rock and Alternative (in the Northeast) these days?

By "Indie 103.1" do you mean the transmitters in Santa Monica and Newport Beach, CA? They have had many call letters and brands over the years. I lived in the area when they were known as Mars FM and later as Groove Radio. Thank God I still have all of the 12 inch singles I discovered from...

[Massachusetts] What's up with Rock and Alternative (in the Northeast) these days?

I have been lamenting the fact for some time that radio stations all sound about the same wherever I travel. It used to be so interesting to check out the various formats and playlists when visiting other cities. Now 92.3 in El Paso is almost identical to 104.7 in Albuquerque, 107.7 in Tucson...

    Bring back AM stereo CQUAM

Does anyone know of an internet list of AM stereo stations? Neither radiostationworld.com nor radiolocator.com include that information. Many years ago 1110 XEWR claimed to be AM stereo when they were a rock station, but now it is Spanish religion. The only time I ever got to experiment with...

    Bring back AM stereo CQUAM

I am so glad my "Oldies" station, KHRO is on AM. It is easy to get in the kitchen and car. I bought a C.Crane 2e radio which does a great job at night when they go down to 800 watts at about 30 miles distance from my home. Occasionally, I like to scan the band before sunrise to see what else...

    [New Mexico] Albuquerque Observations

I have been away for some time in Albuquerque and found the local radio scene there interesting. The FM dial is packed with a signal on almost every alternate frequency (radiolocator brings up 44 FM entries). Many of the new stations are translators. There are FM translators of AM stations in...

[Other Topic] How is a station suppose to ID?

Yes, I remember when all radio stations were known by their call letters and dial position. I suppose it was in the late 80's or 90's that I started hearing "Jack FM" or "Fox Oldies". If they do not like their call letters, I do not believe it is very difficult for a station to change it's...

[Other Topic] How is a station suppose to ID?

I listen to the news in the morning on KRLD (1080) from Dallas. At the top the hour they say "KRLD AM HD, FM HD 2 Dallas". Sometime back this got me to wondering where they are on FM in HD if I should go to Dallas. Of course I looked it up on radiostationworld.com but the casual listener in...

[Other Topic] How is a station suppose to ID?

I just heard "you're listening to KCKK AM Littleton Colorado, K229BS Lakewood Colorado". Obviously I am on AM down here in Texas.

950 in Denver moved to 1430

This is not boring at all and I appreciate the view from a business perspective as apposed to my hobbyist view. My use of the term "useless" was in reference to the very low nighttime wattage stations that I have experienced locally. When I lived in Las Cruces, NM and KGRT (570) first began...

950 in Denver moved to 1430

There simply must not be much of interest in my area at night, low on the AM dial. I have always noticed that the low end of the dial does very well in the day. KGRT 570 used to cover most of Southern New Mexico in the day with 5000 watts, but that was the local station I mentioned above that...
