I posted this on the other board yesterday in response to the question: Are they done transferring things to 110?.

I thought folks over here may find it interesting. BTW, the short answer is NO. There's still a ton of room up there (mostly on spot beams)

and this is only figuring the tps and spots that have been used. There are still some that haven't been used at all

John, I fixed the tp24 issue.

I also did a little analisys here.

Spot beams 26, 27, 33, 36, 47 and 48 are not lit up at all yet.

Spot 26 looks like it will cover Amarillo and Lubbock.
Spot 27 Looks like it will cover San Angelo, Odessa/Midland
Spot 33 looks like it will cover Minot/Bismarck SD and North Platte, NE
Spot 36 looks like it will cover Great Falls/Billings and possibly Glendive
Spot 47 is a Hawaii Spot
Spot 48 is a spot aimed at Cuba

In addition the spot that the Corpus Christi locals are on (17) also covers Laredo and Victoria TX. There is just enough room for both on that spot as it stands.

See ya

Tp 12 spot 28 - 6 channels (room for 6)
This one is for Duluth, MN and looking at the footprint, there really isn't much more they can put there. Unless the footprint covers the SE part of MN, they might be able to put Rochester/Austin/Mason City (6 channels) on that spotbeam too. Otherwise they can add Manakto (1 channel in DMA)

Looking at the spot beam map on the EKB, spot 28 covers the entire state! And there seems to be enough bandwidth for both markets. :)

I don't think it covers SE MN completelly..

Tp4 is the spotbeam for Minneapolis and there have been reports that people in SE MN (who "moved") can't get Mpls locals anymore even with a 30" dish

So unless they can shift the spotbeam a little bit, Rochester may be out of the question.

So with all this extra spotbeam room then Dish can finish the Sd locals left in the country right? They need to do this so they can have an alternative for the distant locals issue. Since they have already had a court rule against them its time for an alternative. Besides they haven't done any sd locals since last August of 2005. THere is only like 40 or so left and I think they need to finish it. I would like to see my locals for my hometown up there. THen everyone would have guide data for their ota digital channels also. Then they can advertise that they are an alternative for Cable in all 50 states , Puerto Rico and maybe even CUBA?:D

Yep , I am in the 140 dma - Pt. Arthur/ Beaumont and I have been waiting for them to uplink this dma for a long time. I was told by someone in the engineering department of my local CBS channel that they already had a room all ready to go so they could uplink all the channels in our area , at their station and that Dish had already come down and talked to them . But here we are a year and a half later and still no uplinked locals.

Dish needs to finish the locals in sd. Then they really could tout this as a big plus in their advertising . "We have every local stations in the country on our service, so where ever you move to , we are there" . Imagine the amount of customers they could attract with all the sd locals , Hd locals in the top 50 dmas , and the most hd national channels than either Satellite or cable. I don't know how many club dish cards I have had handed back to me when the potential sub asks me : "But do we have our locals on the satellite? " This has been satellite's biggest drawback since they started. With the entire country dmas finished this would no longer be used against them in advertising from Cable. Besides , Doesn't Directv plan to uplink all the hd locals in the country by like 2007? If Dish doesn't at least have all the sd locals up on the satellite by next year they will have a hard time competiting with Directv next year .

Charlie don't you want to be first to say DISH has all the locals in the country and the most national hd channels than the competitor? Take advantage of the situation and get it done . You have a bunch of satellites you aren't even using out there and with mpeg4 , if you ever get it done right, you will be able to compress them even more and squeeze all the sd locals on the 110 and 119 sats.

Tony that is up for customers :)

I dont know why Dish can't get the DMA's with 1 or 2 stations in them...I mean geez. Mankato (200) he could add right away (only one station in DMA) and import the rest of the Mpls stations like DirecTv does.

Okay, this is a consevative channel count assuming 12 Standard def channel per transponder. Here is how many more channels can be added assuming the spot beam info on the EKB is correct:

From looking at the data above, it looks like 4 MPEG4 HD channels fit on one TP and maybe 2 or 3 MPEG2 channels per TP depending on the bitrate.

Basically my point was that transponders that are partially filled with SD channels cannot carry any HD channels under the current scheme. This means that if a spot shows that it has room for 18 channels, there is only one "open" tp and one half-full, the number of HD channels is up to 4 not 6.
