WARNING: 3D Video Hazardous to Your Health — Reviews and News from Audioholics

Seems that some research indicates that viewing 3d material frequently can lead to problems with the eyes ability to perceive 3d, especially in children.

"Stereopsis, a result of the frontal placement of our eyes, is the process in visual perception that lets us see depth. Two slightly different projections of the world enter our retinas, which causes us to see in real-3D. Stereopsis made us humans into mighty hunters of prey, builders of civilization and crackers-open of the occasional bottle of beer – but this important process is being tricked every time we watch a 3D movie."

"Children under seven are at risk of strabismus – period.

Going to a 3D movie each month probably won’t hurt anyone’s vision, especially adults; however, if we introduce the 3D effect into the home, we dramatically increase our exposure. We could sit at home with our new 3D HDTV and watch non-stop 3D for days. Even 2D video that hasn’t been coded for the FHD3D format can be upconverted by consumer-grade 3D HDTV through 3D interpolation mode.

Now you’ve gone from tricking your optic nerves into self-imposed strabismus once or twice a month to potentially hours every day – and evidence already suggests this could be harmful to your vision."

Hahahaha, will be a few more years before anyone is able to do this without doing it on purpose.

I have had issues due to depth perception alteration after playing Guitar Hero a long while ago... and that wasn't even 3D.

Good summation; thanks for the warning and posting the link.

Anyone considering 3D purchase should read this first, particularly the households that will have young viewers exposed.

Do you think maybe viewing a 3D movie/month is OK?

I wear glasses,I think that would interfere with trying on 3D glasses. I could get contact lenses, but if I got the kind of contacts where one lense is for viewing long distances[for left eye] & the other lense is for nearsightedness(for reading)[for right eye],wouldn't that also defeat the purpose of 3D glasses?

I have strabismus so I can't see 3D, but I don't think by watching 3DTV you can get it, it's made because your eyes muscles don't work

Watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in Blu-ray 3d on my TV right now.... ....

My eyes, I can't feel my eyes. ;)

Oh, wait, that is the scotch...

Young children could be affected by this. Some in my family have a hereditary condition (a type of lazy eye) that is correctable with an eye patch worn before the age of 5. The put a patch over the good eye to force development of the bad eye. After the age of 5 or so it is not correctable any more since the brain vision centers have developed.

I doubt that occasional viewing of 3D by young kids is going to hurt. But, kids tend to like to watch the same movie over and over. If it was at home, I could easily see a kid watch 3D TV all day long day after day if left to their own devices. I could see this causing developmental issues in young kids.

I see that Sony revised several of its policies today including this one for the PS3 to include:

"Some people may experience discomfort (such as eye strain, eye fatigue or nausea) while watching 3D video images or playing stereoscopic 3D games on 3D televisions. If you experience such discomfort, you should immediately discontinue use of your television until the discomfort subsides.

SCEA recommends that all viewers take regular breaks while watching 3D video or playing stereoscopic 3D games. The length and frequency of necessary breaks may vary from person to person. Please take breaks that are long enough to allow any feelings of discomfort to subside. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

The vision of young children (especially those under six years old) is still under development. SCEA recommends that you consult your doctor (such as a pediatrician or eye doctor) before allowing young children to watch 3D video images or play stereoscopic 3D games. Adults should supervise young children to ensure they follow the recommendations listed above."

I'm getting a 3DTV tomorrow (hopefully), and I'm not going to let my kids use the 3D glasses. They're 5 and 7. Until there is something solid about the effect on children's eyes, I think I'm going to take the road of caution. I plan on getting the Panasonic Viera TC-P50GT25. At about $1000 I can't go wrong. The picture quality is stunning.

Wasn't the same story offered about Viagra causing us to go blind? Guess what, I wear my glasses over my regular glasses with surround sound headphones 20 to 25 hours per week. The wife laughs at me. I guess sex is out. I'm not blind yet.:D

This just in, breathing is bad for you. Inhaling oxygen allows you to live, and the #1 cause of death among human being is living. :D

All of this, this is bad for you, that is bad for you, it’s all crap! I’ll probably die from cancer from the tumor I’ll having growing out of the side of a watermelon from cell phone radiation before I become blind from 3DTV.

My brother had lazy eye. Our family doctor (my great uncle) asked my brother if he could cross his eyes and gave him that as a daily exercise. It worked (that was almost 60 years ago when doctors had to be excellent at diagnosing and offering treatments) Uncle Jim was the best.:D
