Intelsat and Harmonic Deliver Ultra High Definition

and High Dynamic Range Demo Channel to the Americas

Intelsat will expand its UHD and HDR demo channel for Latin America viewing via Intelsat 14 at 315° East, an emerging media platform in Latin America

NAB Show, Las Vegas and Luxembourg, 18 April 2016

Intelsat S.A. (NYSE: I), operator of the world’s first Globalized Network, powered by its leading satellite backbone, and Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT), the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, today announced the expansion of their linear 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) demonstration channel, HVN Intelsat UHD, to include the Latin American region. The HVN Intelsat UHD channel was created to showcase and facilitate the introduction of compelling UHD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content and its ability to create viewer interest and loyalty.

In addition to being broadcast via C-band from Intelsat’s premier HD and cable distribution neighborhood for North America, the Galaxy 13 satellite located at 127? West, HVN Intelsat UHD is now available to media customers in Latin America via C-band on the Intelsat 14 satellite located at 315? East, an emerging media platform in Latin America.

“As UHD gets closer to becoming mainstream, there is an increased likelihood that UHD and HDR technologies will be combined to provide an optimal immersive viewing experience,” said Peter Ostapiuk, Intelsat’s Head of Media Product Services. ”HVN Intelsat UHD will provide a platform for multi-channel video programming distributors (MVPDs) and cable programmers in the Americas to test their content, equipment and workflow for both technologies. In addition, the free-to-air linear channel will now be broadcast via Intelsat 14, which will enable MVPDs and cable programmers operating in Latin America to test their consumers’ appetite for varying forms of high-quality content.”

Intelsat and Harmonic will display the HVN Intelsat UHD channel at the Intelsat booth (SU3110) during the 2016 NAB Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 18 -21, 2016.

“Harmonic’s linear UHD workflow, comprised of the SpectrumTM media server and ElectraTM X3 advanced media processor, enables satellite operators such as Intelsat to cost-effectively deliver higher quality video, and quickly bring new UHD and HDR services to the marketplace,” said Bart Spriester, Senior Vice President, Video Products, Harmonic. “With Harmonic’s video delivery innovation and Intelsat’s satellite and terrestrial globalized network, together, we continue to support the industry’s widespread deployment of higher quality content by providing media customers in the Americas an ideal testing environment for further enhancing the end-to-end delivery of UHD and HDR content to consumers.”

I scan it in as a radio channel on the amiko HDSE. You think I could watch a recording if I record it with the amiko? By transferring the TS file to the computer and using VLC. Well, the amiko is recording. I'll get a couple of minutes and take a look later this week.

I'm not sure if recording what the Amiko Mini thinks is a radio channel would also store the video?

If it does you would need a graphics card capable of 10-bit UHD.

The demo channel is currently a loop lasting about 10 minutes or so.

Brian and N6BY, are you able to display the video properly? I am only getting freeze-frame images about once every 10-20 seconds on this channel. What video card might you be using?

Watched for a few minutes on the K1+ STB. Smooth and no stutter or artifacts.

If the transponder is recorded as a TS (transport stream) instead of the program as a PS (program stream), it will record the entire stream and not only capture the audio service. Many STBs are not capable of logging the h.265 VPID as valid data and only see the valid APID causing the service to be logged as a radio service.

You might have luck with playback using Media Player Classic with proper codecs, but is best if you have a video card as N6BY mentions. I recently upgraded to the GTX 960. Big Ryan went with the 950 and I have seen posts of others using the 970.

Same as Brian -- I used a K1+ STB and saw no glitches.

My earlier attempts to stream to a PC running VLC failed. I just saw frames appear every now and then. However, I'm just using the video from the mother board since I'm not into gaming.
Kind of ironic - a $65 K1+ can receive and display High Dynamic Range UHD, but both my Windows PC and $3000 Retina display iMac can't. :facepalm

Just checked, local store has the GTX970 on sale for $450 instead of the regular $480. Cheap like Porsche..

Brian,

I see a huge number of K1 Plus on Aliexpress at lots of different price points. Which one do you have confirmed working on the 4K feeds?
