510 and the 301

i have a 301 receiver and just got the 510 DVR can i just split the incoming signal
i have an HDTV with multiple inputs , I have hooked it up but don't seem to get all the channels and also do i have to have the 510 authorize to use it ??? I have an extra dish with LNB lying around

There is a $4.99 fee for additional receivers. Yes, it needs to be authorized. Also, if you are not subscribing to America's Everything Pack, you'll also be charged a $4.99 monthly DVR fee.

You cannot simply split the line from the 301 into the 510. It needs it's own run from the satellite to the receiver. Most LNBs have two outputs, so you shouldn't need the extra dish.
