80 Horse Racing Channels Coming to DISH

Serious question. What is the purpose of 80 horse racing channels? What can they possibly show?
I can only imagine this appealing to race tracks so people can bet on and watch races from all over the country. Casinos would probably be interested too.

As for (80) channels, will they broadcast from the top 80 racetracks around the country ? Or, I bet that these won't be full-time channels.

The PDF for them states if the site is an off track betting establishment then for the tech to not do the install.

I took the "OTB" to be referring to an "illegal" establishment type setup. I don't know what it means, to be honest.

OTB is legal.....Basically its betting at horse tracks not local to you

We have a horse track here in town (Canterbury Park in MN) and they have simulcasting they call it but its just off track betting. They have like 25 screens with different tracks around the country for betting on.

You go to the window and say what track then the horse and what you hope it does. SO instead of saying "$2 on #7 to win" as you would on the local track you say
"Churchill $2 on #5 to win"

Charlie lose another bet?

Great!

Just another excuse to compress the $20 per channel internationals till they are unviewable. Instead of providing some internationals in HD like PFC, Globo, and NHK, they keep compressing the 480i SD down even farther to 2.5mbps and charging more when the programmer is sending dish a healthy 12 mbps SD.

Agreed. The internationals from 118 were always inferior from what they were at 148. Now they can be even more fuzzy looking. I'll be interested to see if they give us a free preview for those of us who have 118.

Ahhh, okay... I was vaguely familiar with this arrangement. There's a track not far that a wife's co-worker went to on KY Derby day and bet on a horse in that race. At first, I thought she drove to Louisville just to place the bet !

That said, what does Dish have against these places ? They're legal...

Yea they do look crappy, plus they don't even carry the "GOOD" races from the following

Japan Racing
Keeneland
Kentucky Downs
Los Alamitos Race Course (Quarter horse)
Oak Tree At Santa Anita
Ruidoso Downs (Thoroughbred & Quarter horse)
Turf Paradise
Turfway Park
Zia Park (Thoroughbred & Quarter horse)

I'm not horse racing guy, but those tracks NOT provided sure do seem to include some very good tracks and races. Wow. Almost makes one ask, "what's the point?" without some of those tracks listed above as not available.

Not really into racing either, but the ones I see on that list "Not Carried" are kind of interesting.

Ellis Park, KY Downs, and Keeneland are all on life support, at least according to the way they keep trying to get more tax subsidies out of the taxpayer's wallets. So does Churchill Downs, too, so they may be better off than they say, as well. The only one of the three that runs anything other than glue-factory reject races is Keeneland (per my friends who are into racing.) Perhaps the ones not included wanted more payment than RTN thought they were worth?

So I see since June 3rd there has been an option when you login to your dish account to add this programming for $50 a month but I never saw an actual uplink report on the channels yet, did I miss that report?

Don't care about horse racing just waiting to see how they will use 118 for this.

Typical Dish to sell a service that isnt even available!

per the Racetrack Network the new day is July 1

The new target date is July 1, 2010. We will keep everyone posted if the situation changes. Here is how the transition will affect our subscribers:

When the time comes, it is up to each subscriber to contact DISH Network® about adding RTN to their current service, or, if not an existing DISH Network® subscriber, about getting service in order to continue receiving RTN. Subscribers will not be obligated to order additional channel packages. DISH Network® installation, equipment and service policies will apply.

Once the subscriber has RTN through DISH Network®, it is up to the subscriber to call RTN and cancel the original service. We will continue to bill at the $99.99/month rate until we are advised to disconnect. At that time, subscribers with the newer ADB or TRT receivers should ask us about our buy-back program. The program does not apply to the original Echostar 2700 and 2800 receivers.

RTN reserves the right to deny any delinquent account from receiving the service through DISH Network® until the balance is paid. We cannot intervene in the event of a previous subscriber billing dispute with DISH Network®.

RTN will provide a buffer period after DISH Network® begins to transmit the RTN signal, but we strongly advise that subscribers convert to the DISH Network® version as soon as possible in order to take advantage of the $50/month pricing.
