Ku-band Spacecraft to Deliver EchoStar Services

February 20, 2008 – Princeton, NJ – The AMERICOM-14 (AMC-14) satellite, of SES AMERICOM, an SES company (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG), was delivered to Baikonur, Kazakhstan, to be readied for its Proton Breeze M launch scheduled for the morning of March 15 local time (evening of March 14 EST). The A2100 spacecraft was built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems and is being launched by International Launch Services (ILS) for service at the 61.5 degrees West longitude orbital position.

AMC-14 is an advanced, high-powered Ku-band BSS satellite, designed for multiple missions to operate across the orbital arc from 61 to 119 degrees West. As the third satellite dedicated to AMERICOM2Home?, the spacecraft has been optimized to provide Direct-to-Home video services. After the launch, SES AMERICOM will complete the testing of all spacecraft systems and ready the satellite for continental U.S. service from 61.5 degrees West by EchoStar Corporation (EchoStar).

The AMC-14 satellite provides 8.2 kilowatts of power to the communications payload, which consists of thirty-two 24 MHz Ku-band transponders. In addition, the spacecraft carries a demonstration phased array antenna that enables coverage shaping while the satellite is in orbit. The mission is not dependent upon the experimental array; nonetheless, it gives both AMERICOM and EchoStar an opportunity to test this next generation technology.

The designated mission of AMC-14 is to expand the bandwidth resources needed to increase the number of high definition and other services offered by EchoStar nationwide.

“We are pleased that AMC-14 has been safely delivered to Baikonur; the SES AMERICOM, Lockheed Martin and ILS teams will execute their combined launch mission preparations so that AMC-14 is ready for launch in about four weeks,” said Ed Horowitz, President and CEO of SES AMERICOM. He continued, “We have entrusted this important spacecraft to ILS for an on-time and on-target launch in mid-March; our customer; EchoStar, is waiting to use this payload to expand their services to customers across the nation.”

The AMC-14 spacecraft, along with an assemblage of testing equipment and systems, made up a massive shipment of 18 huge containers with a cumulative weight of 83,533 Kgs. The load was flown to Yubileny Airport at the Baikonur Cosmodrome on an Antonov cargo plane that departed Moffett Air Force Base, California on February 12 and arrived in Kazakhstan on February 15.

The spacecraft was unpacked on Saturday February 16, and a team of SES AMERICOM, Lockheed Martin and ILS engineers and launch specialists began a rigorous sequence of final preparations leading to the mid-March launch. These preparations include: spacecraft fueling, integration of the satellite with the Breeze M upper stage, encapsulation of the unit into the launch vehicle fairing, mating of the fairing with the Proton vehicle, roll-out and erecting of the rocket on the launch pad, and a final set of readiness tests.

Ahh yes, I remember ScoBuck doubting me back in November when I said there would be a launch in Q1.

I said it would be late February which was the plan at the time but now it has been pushed out a couple weeks.

lol. You told me that we would chat again and I would understand what you were talking about.

With what Scott has been talikng about in the pub, I now have to kneel down to your greatness.:D

So now that 61.5 will have a fresh sat, does this mean we will see some new HD? Many have been saying the 129 has the capacity. As I see it, Dish simply could not add any new HD (to their satisfaction) at only 129 as many can only receive 61.5 reliably. Dish had to have capacity at both locations to mirror.

Well someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think one of the 3 Sat's Dish is putting up will go to or near the 129. So both 61.5 and 129 should be taken care of..

There are five HD channels (Tennis, MOJO, WFN, Smithsonian, and MGM) already uplinked to both 129 and 61.5. They could turn those on today if they wanted to.

AMC-14 to 61.5, E11 to 110 and Ciel-2 to 129. E11 should launch in May or June and Ciel-2 is estimated to launch around December.

Dish is not currently concerned with new HD channels they are busy testing and configuring the new all MPEG4 services for later this summer.

Probably no new HD until Mid May or June.

Maybe we might see some new HD before then so right now it's hard to say..

Actually it appears Dish is more interested in HD LiL than national HD. They have 27 markets announce by June, 6 by the end of next month... So, I suspect they want E12/R1 to be in spot mode doing locals before they add more national channels. They have capacity freeing up at the end of next month when SA drops (2 Transponders - TPs). AMC-14 when it gets in place, probably May, will give them four more TPs for national coverage. By the end of May they are looking for about 6-8 TPs more for national use and a lot of spot action at 61.5. If they move more internationals by the end of the year they will have a ton of space at 61.5.

If it's true they have capacity now for more national HD then you already know how important national HD is to DN.

DN isn't going to change its stripes simply because it has some new sats up. They will continue to do what they've always done; perhaps add some new national HD but only when it suits them (e.g. right price) and, it seems, they'll be concentrating on HD LILs and the new MPEG-4 service (just IMO). You may NEVER see MGM-HD, Smithsonian-HD, SciFi-HD, etc. Then again you may, just don't assume they HAVE to be turned on because they're "up there".

Whooo!! If thats what type of HD channels they are working for then we are the luckest people in the world. Those five channels arent anything to get excited about. If anything it just pisses me off even more for not having more HD than we do. Looks like they are more worried about finding a deal on some generic channels than they are about getting what their subs are asking for. What about USA,SCI-FI,SPEED,FX,MTV,DISNEY,VH1,ESPNEWS,BRAVO,CARTOON NETWORK,CMT,CNN,FOX NEWS,WEATHER CHANNEL,SPIKE,ABC FAMILY. What we get is WORLD FISHING NETWORK,TENNIS? Are you serious? Cant wait to watch me some fishing in HD. Im sure there are some who would, but they should be getting channels thats for all the subs. If thats all they can do,then Dish Network may as well kiss there subs goodbuy.

I would not worry Dish will have about the same as Direct does in HD along with everyone else..

why is so hard to understand once they get more room they will add these hd channels - your not missing much on channels like weather or mtv anyways.

It is not hard to understand when you look and see tons of empty space just sitting there on 61.5/129. Dish appears to be taking its time doing anything. Yes they appear to want to use the empty space in spot beams for locals, but they just seem to waste endless time doing nothing. They are probably working on new uplink centers, new fiber lines to those centers, etc, but it is not visible, just looks like they are just twiddling their thumbs and disappointing us.

I do believe Scott and Bob mentioned in the podcast that Dish is building several new uplink centers. The big question. When will they be operational??
