I will be replacing my HR20 with a HR24. I still have many programs stored on the HD of the HR20. Are these stored programs still available for viewing once the receiver is deactivated?

I would have to say without any certainty, no. I owned a Sony Ultimate TV DVR back in 2003 and once I deactivated, I did not have access to my stored programs. But, I'm GUESSING you may possibly be able to sidestep this issue . Try unplugging the incoming cable from the satellite, BEFORE you deactivate it. I'm assuming this would prevent DirecTV's signal from reaching your Access Card and "locking" it, so to speak. There are others on this board with MUCH more knowledge than what I have. In fact, I would say everyone here does!!! So, hopefully someone can answer your question.

No, suggestion, keep the HR20 active till your done watching the shows and then deactivate.

Once you deactivate the DVR functions should also go off.

You can disconnect the cables and phone line from the dvr before it gets deactivated. I think you can still access the programs that way.

Not sure about that Chip, however, it's easy enough for the OP to try that ahead of time.

I think if it doesn't get unplugged it might work, but if it loses power it will look for a signal before forwarding into the menus to be able to access them.

When I bought an old R15 last year there were lots of programs on the hard drive (kids programs) but I couldnt view them as the receiver was deactivated. It gave me the "call Directv to activate the DVR function" screen

before i had my hr21 deactivated almost two years ago, i unplugged the coax and ethernet cables and then i made the call to deactivate. i was able to watch all of my recordings with no issues

when you press list you'll still be able to access the recordings despite of the looking for signal message. that was my experience

But you kept the POWER connected, correct ?
See I too have tried this, but always unplug the power when setting up in the Motor home, the intention is being able to watch recorded shows for a few nights while traveling before we get to our destination where I then set up the dish again.

No i did not. Didn't have an issue. I did that for a month. Unplugged it everyday.

Wow, then why is it I take my HR20 to the Motorhome and set it up, it won't let me access the recorded shows if it doesn't have a Sat signal ?

Were you connected to the Sat signal at the time ?
I was NOT.

Wonder if thats the difference.

No i wasn't. What i did was access the limited menu which happens when there's no sat signal and from that menu which usually only shows two options, from there I press list. Takes a few seconds then the list of recordings show up.

Interesting, so if I go to my bedroom for example and disconnect the SWM and the coax feeding the Sat input, unplug the power ... plug the recvr back in without the Sat being hooked back up, I will be able to access my playlist and watch recordings .....

This is very interesting .... I will give it a try as it would make traveling much easier.

edit:
Ok, I just did what was posted above.
Reconnected my recvr, power, no Sat signal ....
Let it boot up, went to menu, playlist, my play list DID come up, when I went to play one, I got " Service Not Active, Call Customer Service .... ext. 750"

Now we KNOW, that my service IS active as it was working till I disconnected the Sats signal, as well as when I plug the Sat Signal back in.

Could the HR20 be different in this instance from the other newer recvrs ?

may be. or since the last time i did this there might have been an update to the software that doesn't allow what i used to do. now you have me curious. i should try this again when i get home. when i did this it was with an HR21 but that shouldn't matter

Do you have a DVD recorder? That will do, I burn a dvd when I want to keep the program. I don't trust keeping it in the hard drive.

Never trust the HD.

I don't have enough room in the Motor home for another piece of electronics, it's already too hot in there for the equipment when I get down to Texas and too cold in the winter for the box thats in there, it will shut down when temps get extreme.
