[ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5940"]Matt Holliday Stats, News, Photos - St. Louis Cardinals - ESPN[/ame] appears headed to the [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=oak"]Moved Permanently[/ame] in a deal with the [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=col"]Moved Permanently[/ame], baseball sources have told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick and Buster Olney.
Final details are being finalized, though the teams have agreed to terms, a baseball source told Olney. The source said the deal may not be finalized for up to 48 hours.
The deal is also pending completion of physical exams.
Although the package coming back to Colorado has yet to be determined, it's believed that pitcher [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=29092"]Greg Smith Stats, News, Photos - Colorado Rockies - ESPN[/ame] was one of the players under discussion.
David Forst, Oakland's assistant general manager, declined to comment on the trade.
"It's still an on-going discussion,'' he said.
The news comes a day after reported trade talks between the [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=col"]Moved Permanently[/ame] and [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=stl"]Moved Permanently[/ame] fell through. The Cardinals had reportedly offered the Rockies a package for Holliday that was centered around outfielder [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5036"]Ryan Ludwick Stats, News, Photos - St. Louis Cardinals - ESPN[/ame], who hit 37 home runs last season.
Holliday, 28, finished second to Philadelphia's [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4258"]Jimmy Rollins Stats, News, Photos - Philadelphia Phillies - ESPN[/ame] in the 2007 National League MVP race. He hit .321 with 25 homers and 88 RBIs this season. But he'll be eligible for free agency next winter and is represented by Scott Boras, so the Rockies held out little hope to sign him to a longterm deal.
Oakland has been weighing offers for closer [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6175"]Huston Street Stats, News, Photos - Colorado Rockies - ESPN[/ame], but it's uncertain if he's part of the Holliday deal. The Rockies have a need for late-inning relief with [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4731"]Brian Fuentes Stats, News, Photos - Los Angeles Angels - ESPN[/ame] about to leave through free agency.

thought st louis was the leading candidate. all weekend espn was saying holliday to the red birds for ruan ludwick and others.

Me too. I kept waiting for him to officially go to the Cardinals.

I did not see AL for him @ all. Plus Oakland has been known to trade for big names and then still wind up trading them away. This, to me is more of the same for them.

Let's see how Matthew can handle some of the Angels' pitching staff 19 games a year!

You've brought up a good point, were use to seeing the A's trading players ....
Will they turn around and trade Holliday to someone else shortly, for someone else they want ?
