Hello friends,

I have been doing some research on several of the Linux OS receivers such as the AB IPBox and the AZBox and Dreambox receivers.

After testing the AB-IPBox 9000HD, which I find a little too early in the "Beta" stage at this time, I read some of our members threads regarding the AZBox and found their information to be more positive and more enlightening than the support that I have found thus far for the AB IPBox receivers.

I decided to purchase an AZBox Premium and experiment with it as well.

I am curious as to whether the tuner modules are interchangeable between the AB IPBox and the AZBox receivers. I have a suspicion that they are and I will find out for certain soon.

I am curious to ask if the threads regarding the AZBox could be combined into one thread or somehow consolidated to make it easier for others to research? Just a thought.

I did find that one of the posts contained a link to the manual for the AZBox (Elite and Premium). For me, I was required to upgrade my Adobe 9.0 reader to support Korean fonts - but found this to be rather misleading as there were no Korean fonts in the entire manual (unless it was all translated to English via Adobe reader). I must say, the manual is the most detailed, well worded and informative manual I have read for any FTA receiver. Kudos to the author/s of this manual.

I would like to offer another source of information for any prospective AZBox owners, if I may. I found this during some of my browsing. See the link below (which I have modified with "h++p" for the "http" as to not be a direct link).

I received confirmation today that the AZBox Premium was in process of being shipped. Hopefully I will receive it mid week next week.

I would much prefer the direct link. Why are we both doing extra work?

I fixed the link :)

so what did you do with that 800 buck box then?

I am still experimenting with the IP Box and trying to navigate its nuances. It is a very nice machine, but I have the gut feeling that it's HDMI output isn't compatible with my TV (1080i-50 vs 1080i-60) and that disappoints me. I had hoped that it was selectable. I can only use the S-Video, Composite video, etc.

Sure wish that the blind scan feature actually worked, but I didn't know it had it (not advertised as such) when I purchased it, so I am not out anything there. It is like they planned for it, but never actually implemented it. I use my Coolsat 5000 for blind scanning, then take the info from the channels I like and transfer that manually.

Currently, I am using the Coolsat as I am dabbling with a BSC621-2 LNBF to capture C-Band channels via my 1.2 M GeoSat dish. Working pretty good, but I need to spend more time with it for proper alignment. Tried to do this over the past couple of days, but the weather was really giving me fits! Don't know what your weather was like in MN, but it would rain here, then clear off briefly, then rain and then clear again all day long! I just gave up for the day. I am sure it will be warm and sunny and dry tomorrow, since I have to work! RATS!

The AB IPBox does a great job of recording programs, once you figure out a few tricks. Plays back nicely! I am hoping that the AzBox can do the same.

Radar, you know, I keep the question since you first post came - but didn't ask. Now you almost answer to it. :)

[Why you pick that one not AZbox?]

Hi Smith,

Well, several reasons actually.

1: The AB IP Box 9000HD PLUS came stock with a built in 500GB HDD.
2: The 9000HD PLUS came stock with two DVB-S2 tuners.
3: The manufacturer offered more information at the time regarding peripheral equipment (like other tuner modules and HDDs, etc). And there were outlets to purchase them.
4: The reviews in TELESatellite magazine were positive and swayed me.
5: I read about the 9000HD first and had already been doing research on it.
6: I like to experiment with everything I can, just for the sake of fun.
7: Very few people in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia or Australia had posted about the box or their experiences with it on all the sites that I visited, so I thought it would be a ground breaking learning experience (in other words, I would learning it on my own, thus a kick butt challenge)!

So mostly, I just wanted an adventure.

"So mostly, I just wanted an adventure." - that's an argument ! Then $800 mark is not an objection. :)

Well, I had some objections and reservations personally! LOL

But, consider the price of the 500 GB built-in HDD and the second DVB-S2 tuner and the S&H and insurance fees and an overseas wire transfer charge and the total price starts making a little more sense.

What we sometimes pay for our hobbies, eh?

Seriously, though... The Fortec Star Dynamic and the Coolsat 5/6K receivers are the greatest value by far. Easy to set up, easy to use! User friendly and they function extremely well and the pricetag shouldn't scare anyone!

Now that the Coolsats are being dumped on the used equipment market for a song from the Davy Jones Gang, a person could really mop 'em up and use them for their intended purpose.

Sorry if I went off on a tangent there, but I LOVE my CS5K! It's just fun to experiment with others, too.
