Blu-ray Wallops HD DVD In Disc Sales

The Sony-backed format crushes its rival despite low-cost HD DVD players.

Washington, D.C. (November 29, 2007) -- Despite the introduction of low-cost HD DVD players, Blu-ray disc sales walloped rival HD DVD during Thanksgiving week.

That's according to an article by Home Media Magazine.

The publication reports that Blu-ray accounted for 72.6 percent of all high-def discs sold during Thanksgiving week, compared to 27.4 for HD DVD. (The figures are based on data from Nielsen VideoScan.)

Blu-ray, which is led by Sony, has enjoyed a 2-1 sales advantage over HD DVD for months. However, retailers recently began selling Toshiba HD DVD players for under $200 -- roughly $200 less than the lowest-priced Blu-ray player.

In pre-Black Friday sales (weekend of Nov. 16-18), some stores were even selling the Toshiba HD-A2 for just $98.

The introduction of the low-cost HD DVD player has led some analysts to speculate that the Toshiba-backed format would finally overcome Blu-ray's advantage. However, during Thanksgiving week, Blu-ray's sales lead actually expanded to roughly 2.5-1.

Of course, HD DVD supporters are likely to say that disc sales will pick up in the next few weeks after people have had a chance to install their new players.

Blu-ray and HD DVD are rival formats competing for the new high-def disc audience.

In related news, Home Media reports that consumers spent $176 million on DVD rentals (standard-def and high-def) during Thanksgiving week, which is a 7.6 percent increase from the previous week

I think there is NO question that Blu_Ray is better and is going to win and it's obvious that HDDVD has little backing and are dropping their prices. With even price dropping it seems that HDDVD is on its last leg.

OK, if I spoke up in the other thread, I have to speak up here, too....

Yes, these numbers are encouraging for BD backers, since software sales are ultimately what matters, but I still don't think there's anything conclusive here. Wal-Mart's not included (although I doubt they're even 50-50, so it wouldn't make much difference), and it's just too early.

Now, if this keeps up and the ratio keeps growing in Blu-Ray's favor to the point that it pushes Warner into their camp or something similar happens, it might be a different story, but you just never know what is going to happen. I think ultimately it's going to take a major shift by the studios one way or the other to make this thing end, and that's probably going to be based on disc sales.... but not on one week's worth of disc sales.

Did you see the releases for last week?

If two summer blockbusters didn't whomp a bunch of catalog titles and one very good ballet disc (only available online-not even Fry's has it), then Blu needs help. Universal and Paramount didn't even need a buy one get one free to get 25%. :p

Can't wait to hear the HD-DVD spin doctors views on this one...

Well, let's see - while I have both an HD DVD and BD player, it's no secret that I prefer & support HD DVD. And, given last week's releases, I bought 1 HD DVD (Star Trek), and 3 BDs (Live Free or Die Hard, Hairspray, & Rescue Dawn). Let me check - yep, that's a 3:1 ratio, slightly better than the Nielson ratio of 73/27. :eureka

If the ratio during the week of Bourne Ultimatum HD only & Harry Potter 1-5 dual format release is 73/27, I might be concerned - as long as the BDA doesn't have Buy 1, get 4 Free fire sale to skew the numbers again. ;)

it's funny when virtually no hd-dvd's are released and nearly a dozen bluray's were the blu-fanatics are like "OMG!!11!!111!!! we kicked you're a$$e$ in sales!"

That's going to be a key week for sure... although I wouldn't be surprised to see a BOGO to counteract Bourne (don't we all have those 20 movies by now, though?) - I'm more curious to see the HP numbers, since it's probably the biggest dual format release of the year, or right up there, anyway...

And when the biggest release of the year is on HD-DVD and they still get outsold by Blu-Ray, the HD-heads are like "OMG!!!! You CHEATED!!!"

It goes both ways.

Besides, isn't that part of the point? Which format has more movies available?

Yes, but don't you know the 300 or 400 HD-DVD folks have a much higher attach rate; the HD-DVD zealots are taking out a 2nd mortgage in order to buy every HD-DVD on the shelves. Remember: gross BD sales do not count - PS3 sales don't count - sales of blockbuster movies only available on BD are discarded - it's all about the attach rate.

BTW, I purchased three BDs over the holidays: Ratatouille, Meet the Robinson's, and Casino Royale, and only one HD-DVD: Shrek 3

The Wal-Mart numbers may make it worse for HD-DVD. They sold the 80GB PS3 with 10 BD movies over that weekend. My Wal-Mart was nearly completely out of BD movies.

Do we dare use the word "reference" in this context? If that title doesn't get me to buy an HD DVD player this holiday season, I don't know what will.

I know what you're saying but BD wins every week no matter what HD-DVD puts out.

...and nearly every title released on both formats sells better on BD.
