DIRECTV Announces Plan to Launch Next Generation Satellites to Provide Dramatic Expansion of High-Definition and Advanced Programming Services

Wednesday September 8, 4:02 pm ET

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 2004--DIRECTV, Inc., provider of the nation's leading digital multichannel television service, announced today a historic expansion of programming capacity with the planned launch of four new next-generation satellites. These satellites will provide DIRECTV with a massive expansion in local and national high-definition (HD) channels, as well as capacity for new interactive and enhanced services and standard-definition programming. DIRECTV will have the capacity to bring these new services to every household in America.

"We have led the TV industry in choice, quality and service and we are now positioned to lead the industry in bringing new advanced television programming to consumers nationwide," said Chase Carey, president and CEO of The DIRECTV Group, Inc. "Only DIRECTV, not cable or other competitors, will have the capability to bring hundreds of high-definition channels and other enhancements to consumers across the entire country with the consistency, reliability and quality that they demand and deserve."

The first two of these satellites, Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2, will launch in 2005 with programming being offered to consumers by the middle of the year. These satellites will have the capacity for more than 500 local HD channels. With these satellites, DIRECTV will have the ability to bring local HD programming to most of the U.S. population, as well as continuing to expand standard-definition local offerings and other enhancements.

The next two satellites, DIRECTV 10 and DIRECTV 11, will launch in early 2007. These satellites will have the capacity for more than 1,000 additional local HD channels, more than 150 national HD channels, and other new programming offerings. These satellites will provide DIRECTV the capability to bring local and national HD programming and other advanced services to every U.S. household. Consumers will be able to receive all of these services, as well as existing DIRECTV® programming, with a single small satellite dish.

"Today's announcement is one of the most significant in the history of DIRECTV. We are reinforcing our commitment to best serve our customers with the most attractive and compelling array of programming services available," said Mitch Stern, president and CEO, DIRECTV, Inc. "Furthermore, with the launch of local HD channels we will help advance the nation's transition to digital television. Our strongest growth is in our local channel markets where millions of former cable customers have cut their service for DIRECTV; offering local HD channels, as well as a variety of interactive services, will strengthen our competitive position and give cable customers who have yet to switch another reason to subscribe to DIRECTV."

DIRECTV 10 and DIRECTV 11, to be built by Boeing, will be among the largest and most powerful Ka-band satellites ever launched. The satellites, which will take advantage of DIRECTV's advanced transmission techniques and state-of-the-art video compression technology, will deliver national HD programming and will be capable of supporting spot beams carrying local HD broadcast channels in all 50 states. Boeing will also build a third satellite for DIRECTV that will serve as a ground spare.

The Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2 satellites, also being built by Boeing, are approaching completion and the satellites were recently converted to be capable of offering both video and a broadband Internet service. Boeing is also constructing a third Spaceway satellite.

Today DIRECTV delivers one of the most robust HD programming lineups available. The DIRECTV HD Package includes ESPN HD, Discovery HD Theater(TM), Bravo HD+, HDNet, HDNet Movies, and HD Special Event programming for $10.99 per month. This football season, via its exclusive NFL SUNDAY TICKET package, DIRECTV will air more than 125 NFL games in HD format. In addition, DIRECTV offers a HD Pay Per View channel, HBO® HDTV and SHO HD® (HBO® HDTV and SHO HD® are included with their respective premium programming subscriptions). DIRECTV also delivers the national CBS HD feed for customers who live in CBS O&O markets and will launch the national NBC HD feed to customers living in NBC O&O markets this month.

Earlier this year, DIRECTV introduced the DIRECTV HD DVR, the most advanced DVR in the world. The DIRECTV HD DVR enables consumers to record and play back HD programming, record a show while watching another or record two shows simultaneously. It seamlessly supports all these features for HDTV transmissions, standard-definition programming and off-air ATSC broadcasts, all through an integrated advanced program guide. The DIRECTV HD DVR allows customers to record more than 30 hours of HD programming or up to 200 hours of standard-definition programming.

Hey Scott,
do you get press accreditation to get these press releases early with EMBARGO UNTIL(official release) times? What does it take to get official press accreditation?

I claim the Cyclone design logo!!!

It will be a shame when Charlie unleashes his elite Dish Network commandos to take out those birds before they ever reach the sky.

If I were Charlie I would stop saying nothing currently in HD is compelling and work on a plan to counter Directv.

I will give kudos to Directv provided they stick with this plan. 1500 total local HD channels is a lot!! I wonder what other HD channels they plan on getting by next year?

Well from what the article said and I've asked my contact that they will have 5 total satellites. SpaceWay 1-3 with number three being a spare backup. Also they will have DirecTV 10 and 11 that are new and different from Spacway that will have even greater ability than Spaceway. But from what I've been told is that DirecTV will try and offer all current national HD channels within 3 or so months. Now they are going to offer the top 30 or 35 markets local HD channels in mid 2005 and by doing this that will leave them enough room to offer if need another 25-50 national HD channels until such time as the other satellites are launched. In early 2007 they will have the bandwidth to offer over 1500 local HD channels including bandwidth to offer another 150 or so national HD channels as well as VOD ability when used with a hard drive based box such as the NDS or Tivo boxes. They are thinking to start and offer select SVOD and VOD movies to current Tivo subscribers but will end up limiting this content to certain markets such as the top 35 markets until the other satellites launch. From what it looks like is that SpaceWay 1 will be used for the top 35 local markets HD channels.

Also it looks like SpaceWay 2 will be used for all VOD so we have to wait for Spaceway 2 to be launched before even Tivo users can get VOD. Also Spaceway 2 will have room for another 25-50 national HD channels. Now in 2007 once DirecTv 10 and 11 are launched they will move all the top 35 local HD channels onto this new satellite and offer every other local HD markets and by doing this they will free up SpaceWay 1 and 2 to only deal with high speed internet, national HD channels and VOD and SVOD services and this satellite will be reconfigured to handle this.

Right now we don't really know what thier exact plans are but this is the general idea and HD locals, national HD and (S)VOD are plans for DirecTV in the future.

I do have press accreditation, I usually get the press releases just a few moments before sites like Yahoo gets them.

Dish has been good as of late, sometimes I get them a half hour before anywhere else. :)

Perfect, just when my one year commitment with the 811 is up. Good bye dish, hello direct. Hopefully direct will be offering some good promos for first time customers.

How times have changed. A year ago we were all upset at Fox because all anyone needed was 480p, anything more is a waste. Today is the last day before Fox starts doing 720p for their network feeds and four days from the start of the NFL season where most NFC games will be in HD. Now DirecTV/FOX make this big announcement about their commitment to expaning HD distribution. In my book Fox has good from the bastards of HD to the leaders!

But you're still about 45 minutes later than Stargazer.

:D

And a year or two ago we were afraid that this would not be possible. Heck we were afraid that getting all the local markets would not be possible. They still havent accomplished that much yet. Times are changing and so is the technology along with it. They have finally realized that they have to get on the ball to compete against cable, to accomplish these goals and stay ahead of the curve before most cable companies beat them to the punch. Satellite needs to have its own advantages. Looks like the merger was not needed after all to provide the locals to all the markets, especially considering that they are going to be in HD.

this keeps up and the one that was going to be swallowed up D* might be the one doing the swallowing...

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but the way I read it, 2005 will be dedicated to bringing HD locals to each market. The majority of us already get them via OTA antenna. Looks like we'll have to wait until 2007 for any more national HD channels to be added.

Taken from LongHornXP in another thread:
No they have enough room to offer almost everything if not everything out there today with what they have today and expect to see most if not all of the existing HD channels within months. What I was saying was that SpaceWay 2 would be able to offer us an additional 25-50 HD channels between its launch and the 2007 launch. Don't fear at all more new HD channels are coming very soon and we won't have to wait until SpaceWay 2 launches. What I was saying that SpaceWay 2 would give us bandwidth for another 25-50 new HD channels until 2007 if new HD channels are launched between 2005 and 2007.

So from what I am gathering Spaceway 1 will update the locals to become available in more areas 30 - 35 markets, Spaceway 2 will offer more space for new content.
Maybe the 25-50 channels that will become available will get us Fox Sports Net HD Regionals as well as whatever else is out there.

Actually the regional sports networks will be part of the HD locals deal. So for example if DirecTV added the top 40 markets and lets say those markets have PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, WB and UPN HD feeds. Now add that each market will have two RSN HD feeds like the Tampa Bay area of Florida having Fox Sports Net Florida HD and Sunshine Network HD. So at max each market would have 9 HD channels. So at 9 HD channels per market times 40 markets that would make the total 360 HD channels. So I would assume they would do only 35 markets and would have about 300 channels and if they could do a total of 500 local HD channels I would guess they could configure it in such a way that DirecTV could offer 300-350 HD locals and 50 national HD channels using SpaceWay 1 alone.

Scott,

Just a suggestion, but instead of waiting a year, just shut down the Voom Forums now so you save money and bandwidth. ;)

RIP Voom. I'm going to sell short as much as I can when it starts trading.
