TV Ratings: TNT Gets Much-Needed Hit With 'Murder in the First'

Following an exceptionally strong lead-in from flagship Major Crimes (5.2 million viewers), the Steven Bochco drama opened as cable's top series launch of 2014 with 3.8 million viewers during its inaugural telecast. (With two telecasts apiece, Major Crimes pulled a total 6.7 million viewers with Murder in the First nabbing 3.8 million.)

It's exceptionally good news for TNT, coming out of a softer winter with the non-starter launch of Mob City and the failure of last summer's big drama play, King and Maxwell. Turner programming chief Michael Wri?ght underscored his drama-focused network's need for a new hit during the May upfront. And, indeed, summer sees an ambitious rollout, with Michael Bay's The Last Ship and Howard Gordon's Legends in the pipeline after Murder in the First.

On top of the dependable launchpad from Major Crimes, TNT's crown jewel since the departure of parent series The Closer, the network can thank hefty exposure from its recent NBA coverage. In the adults 18-49 demo, where TNT is increasingly focused after years catering to the 25-54 set, Murder in the First brought in a total 1.1 million viewers for the night.

USA Network Tops Cable Weekly Ratings Race

USA drew 1.9 million viewers during the week of June 9 to June 15 to top all cable networks, according to Nielsen. Last week’s winner History finished in a second place tie with Disney Channel and Fox News with 1.7 million viewers, while TNT finished in fifth with 1.5 million viewers.
TBS (1.46 million); A&E (1.4 million); HGTV (1.3 million); FX (1.2 million) and Nick At Nite (1.1 million) rounded out the top 10 for the week.

Nickelodeon barely topped Disney on a 24-hour basis, averaging 1.47 million viewers to Disney’s 1.40 million watchers. Adult Swim (1.2 million); Cartoon Network (1.1 million) and USA Network (1.1 million) followed closely behind.

For the second week in a row HBO’s Game Of Thrones (pictured) was the most watched show on cable. The fantasy-themed show drew 7.1 million in its season four finale, topping TNT’s Major Crimes, which drew 5.1 million watchers.

CBS' Big Brother continued to top the ratings, with another steady showing for its latest Wednesday telecast.

Big Brother (6.8 million, 2.3) was the top-rated program on the evening, with lead-out Halle Berry's Extant (5.7 million, 1.1), inching up a tenth for its two-hour broadcast. CBS was the No. 1 network among adults 18-49 (1.5) in primetime.

Meanwhile, NBC's America's Got Talent (9.3 million, 1.8) slipped to a new low, down a tenth from last week's comparable telecast, while Taxi Brooklyn (4.7 million, 0.8) stayed even. NBC won the night in total viewers with a 6.5 million average.

After 2 consecutive nights for NBC, Wednesday night was for CBS on the 18-49.
Interesting to see that ABC´s Black-ish had a strong debut with 3.3

This is what I call a very strong start for ABC´s How to Get Away With Murder, 3.8 (18-49) and 11.90, and that´s when now CBS has Thursday night football.

Monday night NBC was number one.
On CBS Scorpion and NCIS LA went down.
Scorpionnotched a 2.5, down six tenths from last week's 3.1 adults 18-49 rating. NCIS: Los Angeles earned a series low 1.6, down three tenths from last week's 1.9 adults 18-49 rating

Monday and Tuesday nights NBC was number one on 18-49 demo.
Monday night 10 PM time slot same places as last Monday, no surprise there, but I expect some changes when State of Affairs replaces Blacklist.

State of Affairs starts OK (2.2) keeping the number one position for NBC (ABC second, CBS third) that The Blacklist had in the Monday night time slot.

Next week will see some changes in programming schedules.
As The Blacklist will move to Thursdays 9 PM, it looks like it´s going to have it tough in the same time slot as ABC´s Scandal.

NBC´s new show Allegiance will be on Thursdays 10 PM time slot in which ABC´s How To Get Away With Murder is king, even CBS Elementary was third on that time slot (in the demo) last week.

Another solid night on Thursday for ABC, Scandal and HTGAWM even though falling down, still number one on their timeslot.

NBC Nightly News took a double-digit tumble in its first broadcast with Brian Williams name officially stripped from the broadcast, a.k.a Wednesday, according to fast affiliate time period stats issued by Nielsen.
ABC’s World News Tonight beat NBC Nightly News by 347,000 viewers on Wednesday. The previous Wednesday ABC’s newscast lost to NBC’s by nearly 400,000 viewers in fast affiliate time period stats (apples to apples). Likewise, two weeks earlier, ABC’s newscast had trailed Williams by more than 600,000 on Wednesday night in the early numbers.

In the news demo, this past Wednesday ABC beat NBC by 109,000 viewers, the early stats show. The previous Wednesday it had trailed Williams by nearly half a million viewers in the demo. Two weeks ago ABC trailed NBC by about 300,000.

This past Thursday night – the second nightly broadcast under Williams’ six-month suspension (which many industry navel-lint gazers believe to be permanent) — Nightly News delivered its lowest numbers of the week in total viewers – 8.570 compared to Monday’s 9.802 mil. Nightly also clocked its lowest number of the week in the news demo – 2.128 million versus Monday’s 2.489 mil. Meanwhile, ABC’s World News Tonight clocked its largest lead of the week in both metrics and trailed Nightly by the smallest margin in adults 18-49.
