Is it unheard of to put a BUD (8'-10') way up in the air? I'm thinking about a BUD but it would work out best if I could put it up behind my two-story house right up against the house, shooting over the house. To do so, the dish would need to be on a 35'-40' long pole or tower. Is this even feasable? It'd be something like this (borrowed from http://www.ultimatecharger.com/dish.html:

its possible to have it that high...Up by the lake house, I've seen a 10 footer on the roof!

Before DSS, i used to see them all the time on people's roofs in my town...6 to 10 foot dishes...Most of them were mesh, but did see a few soild dishes. As a kid,it amazed me that it would last some of the strong winds that we got in our area of PA, but no of them ever blew down...GO FOR IT!!!

It is not a problem to do this, though make sure to do major over kill on the install; a big dish can cause serious injury or even death if it comes down in high winds, so you may want to contact a pro, or at least do some extensive research on wind load. Great place to start would be here: http://www.geo-orbit.org/sizepgs/tuningp2.html
If you need a pro hope one is close by: http://onsat.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=12&sid=f0926b5b782a1e7d24c8ded62f79dd52

Good luck, it will be hard to do and take some time, but is well worth it.

A lot of homes here in Florida have 8' - 10' dishes installed near the roof on a long pole. However, after last years hurricanes, I sure wouldn't do it. :)

I saw a house with a bud on a telescoping pole strapped to the side of the house... up over 2 stories.

In New Hampshire, I had a 12' mesh bud on my house on a saw horse mount with a 18' pole to get above pine trees for F4/f1 and the denver locals (back then in 88-91).

It survived Hurricane Bob in 1991 (I know, because it was the day I was laid off from Digital)

The dish did try to 'take off' when it was facing almost up (for satellite s2 69' way back then), guess the wind wanted to cut through the dish.
