Buying a on demand movie.

Hey, zplugger. It will depend on what kind of on demand movie you rented. If it's an IPVOD, it will require internet connection and data to be able to stream the movie. If it's just one of our regular VOD movies, it will use the DISH antenna/satellite signal to watch the movie. Did you happen to rent the movie from the guide or was it rented from the menu?

On the Hopper receivers the VOD (video on demand) are channel 1 and channel 501 in the Guide. They don’t have a specified start time and can be watched at any time since they use the internet to stream the movie.
Channels 502 - 526 in the Guide are HD PPV (pay per view) and channels 527 - 536 are SD PPV. The PPV movies have a specific start time in the Guide since they are delivered through the satellite.
If a movie has a specific start time in the Guide it is delivered through the satellite.
All of the “On Demand” content is delivered via the internet since it can be watched at any time.

Thanks for the quick answers. I always assumed all VOD was streamed. Now I know I can rent movies without blowing up my satellite internet data.

I thought the ppv below channel 2 on my 722k was stored on the hard drive and delivered via satellite?

All VOD and PPV listed in the Guide do not require Internet data to view. It is correct that the channel 1 and 501 VOD are stored on the hard drive, while the PPV are provided through the satellite signal. They only require Internet to order it with your remote from the Guide.

The movies and shows available through the On Demand Menu list are IP VOD and would require an internet connection to download for viewing. If an order requires internet, it will prompt you to start downloading it after renting or purchasing it.

Thank you Dish Support. I was wrong in assuming that channel 1 and channel 501 used the internet to stream the movie. They are downloaded to the hard drive by the satellite. I apologize for the misinformation. Unfortunately I can not edit my previous post to correct the misinformation.

I am a little green using On Demand so have a couple of questions if you can help. Are all the On Demand selections in channel 1 and 501 identical? If so, why are they in two different sections in guide? Also, why do some of the selections have a choice to Rent/Buy and some have a choice to just Rent only?

Why is there another section in the guide also labeled On Demand on channels 502 thru 535? They too have the same thing, some selections say Rent/Buy and some just say Rent only. Why not just have one section in the guide for all On Demand selections/channels?

Do those get pushed down to the hard drive whether or not we select them?

They reserve over 100 gb for ppv if I am not mistaken, seems like I recall about 360gb of the 500gb capacity of the 722k is for personal recordings the rest is reserved for dish use. Probably more on the hopper since it has a bigger drive.

How do I watch a VOD (non-internet) movie using a rental certificate? I have done this once on an internet required VOD, but not without buying another one that I did not watch.

Hey, reubenray. When you're trying to order a standard VOD, does it happen to have an order number?

I don't know if I try from my remote. I think this is how I bought a movie that I did not watch. The movie that I used my certificate for was done using my laptop.

When you log in to Mydish.com, there is a "Order On Demand" tab, which allows you to enter an Order ID number available on channel 1 or 501. You can either press the Info or Select button on the remote, and the Order ID number will show under the title. Once you enter that on Mydish.com, you should see an option to enter your certificate number.

Rent/buy means you can put base the movie and it doesn’t expire. Rent expires within 48 hours usually. That is also why there is a cost difference for buy. Not every title is available for purchase.
