Im considering buying an HP z557. It comes with an Intel Pentium 4 530J w/ HT. I just realized that it uses the same socket (LGA775) as the Pentium D products. So, would there be any problem with me purchasing a Pentium D 830 and just popping it in? Obviously there are warranty concerns, but would it work?

the machine runs MCE 2005, which does support the dual-core procs.

What motherboard does it have in it?

The ability to swap processors will lie in the motherboard/chipset and socket.

Mainboard
Chipset type Intel 915P Express
Data bus speed 800 MHz

What brand mainboard is it?

From what I can tell from reading over at MSI's website, for their 915P Express chipset motherboard, the highest Pentium D you can go to is the 600 series.

I think I know why too. The 800 series is dual core. I don't think the 915P chipset supports dual core.

Well, I went ahead and purchased the z557 anyway. Its being delivered tomorrow morning. If it doesnt run WMV-HD stuff well, Im packing it back up and sending it right back.

It should run that just fine. My work computer is just a plain P4 (no HT, and 400MHz FSB) and it plays WMD-HD just fine.
