My main reason to get FTA is for the chinese stations for my parents. What kind of broadcasting is avaiable? Are there TV shows? Is it comparable to what is offered from Dish/DirectTV international packages?

welcome :wave

Here is a list of what is mainly on KU Band. You would need a 30" or larger dish and a KU Band LNB.
http://www.global-cm.net/MPEGlistKuBandUS.html

the right column says the language. A fair amount is on IA5 (97W) and you could use a fixed dish. There is some other channels sprinkled around a couple other satellites so a motorized might be good too :)

(I don't know if Chinese & Mandarin Chinese are kinda the same because there are some chanenls that are Manadarin Chinese...if not, my apologies) :)

Thanks Iceberg. Mandarin is one dialect of chinese. Cantonese is the other main one with many many less popular ones. I was hoping to get some responses from people who actively watch these channels and could comment on the quality of the shows.

I watch them now and then, even if I'm not a speaker of the language.

IA5 has quite a few Chinese channels, I believe most of which are from Taiwan, or from mainland expats in the States. There are many (!) game shows, news programs, dramas, comedies, and even a few religious (mostly Buddhist) stations.

If you had the ability to catch more than one bird, China's state TV is on G3c, along with their English and Spanish channels.

If I want to get IA5 and G3C, should I get a motor?

yes

The satellites are too close to use 2 LNB's (they are 2 degrees apart and minimum is 4)

G3C has CCTV4 in Chinese and CCTV9 in English (some times its Chinese with English subtitles)

The motor is something I can get in the future right?

So right now on my shopping this I plan to get the following:

31in fortec dish
coolstat 5000 receiver
compass (cheap one?)
sat finder (cheap one?)
coaxial cable

do I need to get anything else?

A compass is pretty much a "shuld have"
The sat finder not really. Use the meter on the receiver

The dish & reciever are good. I use a Coolsat 5000 myself :)

You would just need a KU Band LNB

looks fine.

You might want to check out the sponsers at the top. Might find a good deal there

Sadoun has a 31" dish/LNB combo for $60 or a complete set with receiver for a little more

Chinese

Mainland CCTV and a couple of the Taiwan stations have some of the best quality FTA programs out there for North America -- but that's just my opinion.
???????????????

Currently, CCTV4 is at G3C which you can watch for free, and at IA5, there one Taiwan government run channel MAC is also free, which re-run three or four times in a day. and couple buddhist channels, one fa lung kung channel you could watch for free also. There also couple preview channels from ETTV which can still able to watch for two or three more months once ETTV complete transfer their program to Dish. MAC and the other two buddhist channel also can watch free at SatMex6, those signal at Satmex 5 are already shutdown.

Click each link for the bird, over on the right.
That takes you to another Lyngsat page.
If the bird is xxxºE, it's on the wrong side of the planet.
If the bird location is between about 60ºW and 150ºW, you might have a chance.
Longitude of Los Angeles is about 118ºW, so 150ºW would be out over the Pacific, and 60ºW would be back east, roughly south of Cuba.

This list is based on slightly old info, but you might still find it helpful.
