Where it's Warm
A tantalizing hint from the manufacturer regarding the new Ciel 2 satellite's capabilities.- presently scheduled for sometime around the end of the year.

"The CIEL-2 satellite, which has a 16 years maneuver lifetime, will provide high definition television programs throughout the United States and Canada and will also serve 100 local markets (Determined Market Areas - DMAs) for high definition television programs in key US markets.------------- the new mission (145 spot beams on the USA: multispot antenna, fine pointing system with multispot antenna locked to ground beacon)."

What they could be planning is swapping out everyone's receivers that are going to pickup HD from 129 and once enough people churn out that have MPEG-2 receivers and the others swapped out to HD they will swap the remaining to MPEG-4 once there is certain low percentage of people that have MPEG-2 receivers.

later this year.

Not a chance. Unless they want to launch sans insurance. Or they find something else to launch it on.

The part that failed needs to be redesigned and tested. Many months. Maybe this time next year.

Last failure set things back six months, as I recall.

The Russians sent out a press release yesterday (4/24) detailing an upgrade to their quality control program. They also said that they meet with the insurance companies today (4/25). So, one might expect to see a statement on schedules released soon.

Man yeah lets hope things work out for this Sat due to the 129 needs all the help it can get.. :)

Right you are. One of Echostar's filings a while back included a statement that Echostar 5 (129) would run out of stationkeeping fuel at the end of 2008.

Dish should have E8 as a spare just in case, but they will not like to have to move it over. Not only does it cost fuel but they like to have a backup satellite near 110/119 for emergencies.

There's that 4 letter word again. Sigh. Maybe with the Russians it really will be "in the near future."

"The first new commercial spacecraft for an up-and-coming Canadian satellite operator successfully ascended into orbit around the planet Wednesday atop a Russian rocket. The Proton booster blasted off at 8:43 a.m. EST from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan carrying the Ciel 2 spacecraft. It took about nine hours and five firings by the Breeze M upper stage to haul the 12,260-pound [5,560 kg] satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit. The craft's anchor customer will be the DISH Network television broadcast service."

Mr. Wilson, nice thread resurrection. I had forgotten that E5 was projected by Dish to run out of station keeping fuel by the end of this year.
