I am looking to take the family on 4 or 5 day cruise somewhere around the end of May. I am looking to go to the Carribean.

I am looking something that is good for the kids however I don't want a Disney cruise. The kids are 3 and 12.

Anyone got any pointers for good deals or advice?

We were looking last night at Carnival and we want a deluxe room with a balcony because the other rooms were to small for all 4 of us in the same room.

So who out here are our travel experts. :D

Thanks for your help!

Scott,
Not a travel expert but we just took our first cruise last month on Carnival to the Western Carribean, it was 7 days out of Galveston, TX. Carnival is great if you have younger kids because they offer "Camp Carnival" to the kids at no extra cost to you. We took our 3 1/2 year old son and he just loved it.

We also had the upgraded room with a balcony. It had a king bed and a couch/sleeper. You may want to call them and see what they have when it comes to two kids.

You may want to remember that your last day of the cruise is actually not a day of cruising but you are getting off the ship around 6:30am to 10am... And the first day is only a half day since you are usually leaving port around 3pm to 4pm...

If you go to carnival's website and sign-up they should send you cruise deals in your email. If you want to PM me with your email address, I will forward to you what I just got from them in my email...

If you're taking the kids DON'T go on Carnival. It's an adult party boat. Nothing on the boat starts before about 3 PM and there's almost nothing for kids. "Camp Carnival" for our boat was a bunch of bored kids playing cards.:(

Now the Midnite buffet is great, if you want to eat at Midnite.;)

Just so you won't think I'm anti-cruise, my wife and I went on Royal carribian last year and loved it.

Carnival is supposed to have the best kids program. I was talking with David Bott the other day and he also recommended Carnival for this reason and he should know he goes on a lot of cruises. :)

I would like to go on the AVS cruise but dont feel like flying from CT to LA.

I went on a Carnival 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise last year and loved it. There was pleanty for kids to do on the ship and they seemed to be having a great time. I liked it so much I signed up for a cruise package. We're scheduled to go to the Western Caribbean in April and Alaska in September. I really enjoyed Carnival and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food in the dining rooms. If you're not a club member though, be prepared for a 3-4+ hour disembarking the ship at the end of the cruise.

The 3-4+ hour disembarkation is not normal. They now have the option for you to carry your luggage off with you which allows you to leave earlier if you want. Also, if you are not in a hurry to leave the ship in the morning of disembarkation then you can just sleep late, eat breakfast (yes it is available that morning), and sit back in your room till later on to leave...

Oh, and the Camp Carnival for kids is structured where they have things they do with them like games, crafts, and such. they even break them down into separate age groups. We went on the Carnival Conquest.

My mom is a travel agent for 16 years and been on 16 cruises. She's got a good working relationship with most of the cruise reps (Carnival, RCL, NCL, Disney) She's been through the Disney schooling and got awards through them as well as Carnival awards.....I sent you a PM Scott....hope you guys call :)

Going to Bermuda and the Bahamas the end of August. Leaving right from NY. This is our first cruise and we will be taking the boys 10 and 9. We are going on the NCL Dawn for 7 nights. They are suppose to have a good kids program. We picked this cruise because of the NY port being that we live in CT. No airports to deal with :)

Scott,

At the time of year you are going Carnival is like spring break. I am sure your kids will be fine in all of that but don't be surprised if the majority of the people are college age and doing beer funnels around the pool. Plenty of eye candy too. Carnival is a good fun atmosphere but it won't be a cruise you will come back and brag about the food and luxury. It's kind of the Chevy of Cruise lines but then there is nothing wrong with that.

When you book a cabin don't worry so much about the size and location unless you just want to spend a fortune for a suite. You spend so little time in there that it won't matter and even if you have an ocean view you will rarely look out the window. Just go up on deck. The food is average but you can order as many meals as you want. Drinks are reasonable but they can add up in a hurry so you may want to bring your own if you can. Make sure you bring sea sickness pills and start with them for the first day or so (once you start vomiting you can't keep them down long enough to digest) and if you hear that you will be going into a storm start taking those pills as soon as you can. Last time I went we hit a Nor' easter and even though the ship is huge and has stabilizers we were all over the place. I get motion sick easy but I knew we were going into it and got them into my system early. BTW Ginger Root helps too.

It's been a while since I have been on a cruise so I am sure I missed some stuff but feel free to get in touch with me and I can help you figure things out. BTW you probably want to leave out of Fort Lauderdale or Miami. I can see Port Everglades from my office so I would love to catch you and your family for a drink somewhere.

Keep this in mind.. we have these things coming up in May

Fleet Week USA presented by McDonalds (May 1-7, 2006)
McDonald's 2006 Air & Sea Show (May 6-7, 2006)

If you are here during those times they are incredible. The air and sea show is the largest in the country. If you are here for fleet week I have a lot of connections and may be able to get you on one of the naval ships

LOL I don't know why they say the food is just ok..I've been on Carnival 4 times and love the food......it's not as elegant as Celebrity or Holland America or even Princess but the food is better than ok.....Carnival hire top of the line chefs...you don't have to pay for the food only drinks and other stuff you might want to buy. They have nice land tours you can book on board ship or even ahead of time with your travel agent. If you are looking for something very nice Disney is the way to go because they have the best kids program no matter what others say.....my mom was on the Magic before it was open to the general public....it was $35's a day for Agents only and the staff have it very well together....

Disney has no casino. :D

My wife has calls in now to a bunch of travel agents We want to go on a trip before she goes back to work again.

Thanks for all the help so far.

I have a good friend who works for Crusise One a trvel agency that books with all the lines I can supply info if you want it. Call or write.

Couple of things that are not always obvious to the first time cruiser.

Look at the size of the ship and compare with the passenger load + crew. This will tell you about the density of the ship. Some are better than others but one complaint I hear from experienced Carnival and other class cruises is that the Carnival ship is more crowded, entertainment is second rate and food is second rate. Also, Carnival has had its share of food poisoning problems. Thats what I hear as I have not personally gone on a Carnival cruise. I have done several with Princess and Royal Caribbean. RC has better entertainment and more daytime activities. Princess is better suited for art lovers with their art displays and auction daily. Food is better on Princess and I liked the Princess minisuites better as they were bigger than RCC for the same $. Room service is better on Princess. Internet activity sucks on both but on RCC you can get a dialup in your room at 56K for $100 per week. On Princess you go to the library or Cafe and connect via wifi. It is very slow and very expensive on Princess. They also make it difficult because you have to buy connect time for 1 hour for an obscene price and it is biulled whether you get to the www or not. Your credits purchased will start being used the moment you type in your access PW. That sucks. I know because in one week I got 15 e-mails processed for a total cost of $120. Obviously I filed a big time complaint about that. RCC was super! It went down twice in a week and I paid $100 for the week unlimited and was able to upload a video and many pics to my ftp site for the AVS guys to see. If Princess would have spent 10% of what they spent decorating the Internet Cafe on their network connect, it would have been a better experience. The place was very nicely decorated, however. :(

If you are planning to go anywhere for a week on a cruise ship, be sure to get a minisuite with a balcony. Princess and RCC are known for having the most of these in their ship's design. This makes balconies a better bargain on these cruise lines.

In the Caribbean there are basically two routes, Eastern and Western.

For shore adventures I recommend the Western. For shopping and restaurants I recommend the Eastern. There is one more which are the winward islands but these are mostly 10 day cruises from P.R.

On the west coast, the best is the Mexican Riviera. I was on this in October. Very nice, but the cost for us in FL is another grand due to the need for airtravel but for you it may not make a difference. It was a good experience and I had never been to baja CA so I liked that. However, for sights and activities, I prefer my own back yard to the south.

Main recommendation is to get a minisuite with balcony.
Second is to not rely on Ships internet.
Third, you need a passport now. Don't think a drivers license will work. Be sure that is up to date.

Warning- There are lots of cruise bargains but all have gotchas so be careful if shopping for price.

And yes, David Bott is an expert. Trust his recommendations. It is not his nature to steer anyone wrong. he has had his share of good and bad experiences with the booking end of this business. But, on two cruises we went with him he and his wife have put on quite a wonderful vacation for us.

Ok here is what we are looking at now...

8 Day to the Caribbean leaving from New York (No Airfare and the prices were only a few hundred bucks more then a 4 day cruise from Miami)

With a Guarenteed Suite for 4 people

$5316.80 and we get a $200 Ship Board Credit.

Everyones prices seem to be the same. This is aboard The Carnival Legend.

This bad or good?

Last time I took a carnival cruise they WOULD NOT let you bring booze on board. Soda was ok, but no booze.

This was about 6 years ago.
