Satellite Update
DirecTV Enterprises, LLC filed an application for authority to launch and operate the Ka-band payload of DirecTV 9S at a nominal 101 degree west longitude (WL) orbital location. A grant of the application will combine the Ka-band payload with a DBS payload on a single high-power hybrid satellite. DirecTV plans to use the Ka-band satellite system to provide additional capacity for back-hauling the signals of local broadcast stations for local-into-local services in additional markets. The FCC said DirecTV has begun construction of the satellite at its own risk, pending approval of the application, so that it can complete construction and launch the hybrid satellite in the spring of 2006.

So are they re-naming birds?

DIRECTV 9S is designed to operate from orbital locations at 101 degrees West longitude or 119 degrees West longitude. As a back-up for DIRECTV's 4S and 7S satellites, it will be capable of providing up to 54 transponders for high-quality local and national digital video service broadcast into 27 beams. In an alternate configuration, the satellite will be capable of providing up to 44 transponders broadcast into 30 beams.

***Those tranponders were listed as Ku, so now they are Ka?

The first post does say A grant of the application will combine the Ka-band payload with a DBS payload on a single high-power hybrid satellite so to me it looks like they want to do both SD and maybe some HD.

No, they aren't renaming birds. DirecTV 9S is a duplicate of the Ku payload on the DirecTV 7S satellite. DirecTV 9S, according to this release, will also house a Ka-band payload.

The Ku-band (DSS) payload is a spot-beam payload; the Ka-band payload looks like it will be for backhauls.

The theory is that the remaining markets will be uplinked using the Ku-band spot-beam payload.

Notice it says "high quality" and not HD. Hmmm, perhaps that means that some channels will not be the best HD quality or have Enhanced Definition.
