Does anyone have any idea if a standard 120v ac receiver can be modified for 12v DC ?

If you use one battery, than yes it will drain it quicker than if there is no drain, but perhaps not by much (assuming the reciever only and 15-20W consumption), I assume this in a vehicle? If so, you may want to look into a multi-battery setup, it involves two (or more) batteries which 'switch' sources, and alternate charging cycles when the motor is running so they both get (re)charged. this way you will have plenty of startup power, and have plenty to run your setup for extended periods without having to start the engine every hour.
