DirecTV to Program WiMAX

Wireless broadband, the once slow-moving technology, continues to acquire true believers. DirecTV on Thursday became the latest to express more than a passing interest in the technology. The company said that it was “actively engaged” in finding ways to enter the growing market for wireless broadband services. Chase Carey, chief executive of the biggest U.S. satellite operator, said after announcing the company’s second-quarter results that no strategy had been decided yet in this growing area but it has become an area of focus. “We are actively engaged in talking to an array of parties that are participating in [wireless] broadband… about various forms of relationships,” he is quoted as saying in The Financial Times, adding this could involve partnerships, alliances, or investments. DirecTV made a profit of $162 million in the second quarter, its first in two years. The satellite company added fewer than expected new subscribers, with 225,000 additions, 45 percent less than in the same period last year. “Results in the seasonally weak second quarter demonstrated a continued search for a growth/profitability balance,” said Aryeh Bourkoff, an analyst with UBS. “DirecTV is sacrificing subscriber growth for profitability.”
