Dish Credits gone

No one can say "satellite providers could if they cared to customize pricing to regions that are more competive...."

They'd have to know what's in the contracts the satcos signed. Besides, can you imagine the screaming? And who would be the first person to come here complaining about it?

comcast customizes services to be more competive in certain areas.

wonder why E hasnt done this too.........

Is there a cable company competitive enough to provide 2 HD DVR's which can record up to 3 or 4 HD streams at one time and make the video available on up to 4 independent viewing screens, two of which are HD? All for only $17 per month plus programming charges? I don't believe FIOS can even do that, can DirecTV do it yet?

Directv for $18 can have HD on all 4 TV's

HD DVR on one TV...record 2 HD streams...output to 1 HDTV
HD DVR on 2nd TV...record 2 HD streams...output to 1 HDTV
HD unit.....output to HDTV
HD unit.....output to HDTV
so thats $15 for 3 extra receivers and for $3 more get MRV to share the DVR stuff (both DVR's) amongst all 4 TV's

Comcast covers much of the country but their rates and contract rules vary depending on location.... no one complains about this.....

competition is a wonderful thing

Well when the next report shows that Dish did have some churn in the last quarter, but they did stay profitable and when it's reported that Charlie is hiring even more"beancounters" cause you know he sure loves those beans!.Then I believe that a dose of reality will set in and life as we know it will return to normal.;):D

We can only hope.:)

or overwheming churn and sub loss will suddenly be top priority and retention and fair pricing will return:)

Charlie will get interested when churn is a couple million and sub losses increase

Satellite tv caused competition for cable companies which in return caused them to have to step it up a notch, especially when locals became available in a lot of markets.

That's not the same though. That gives you 4 independent viewing HD tvs, but you you don't get DVR on 2 of them.

Dish gets you 2 HD TVs, 2 SD TVs all with DVR and all Independent viewing. Apples to apples compare would be more meaningful. I.e. what is it on DirecTV for 2 HD DVRs that can record 3 to 4 HD streams and 2 SD DVRS.

Dish subs late 2007 ... 13.78 M
Dish subs mid 2010 ... 14.32 M (19 K net lost 2nd quarter 2010)

DTV subs late 2007 ... 16.83 M
DTV subs mid 2010 ... 18.76 M (100 K net gain 2nd quarter 2010)

The battle isn't over, but Dish is certainly not headed in the right direction. The only thing not clear is at what point does Dish fall far enough behind DTV that it becomes a "niche" product.

Hardly anywhere near there. Dish started, IIRC, about two years after DirecTV and has closed the gap rather handily. Some years will be better than others. Even with all the complaining, poster after poster has shown Dish is still price competitive, often even price leader.

If you have multiple DVRs, you should pay for them. Dish has decided that that category of customer should shoulder more of the load, especially as more capital is tied up in them.

I suspect D* will be doing similar in the future, more or less.
