Dish/Hopper 3 w/ 77" OLED

Is anybody running a 77" display with Dish / Hopper 3?

I'm looking to upgrade from my 11 y.o. 60" LCD and would like to move to an OLED. My living room is large and I have plenty of space to fit a 77" so would like to go that direction. Seating distance is ~12'. But I'm a little concerned going that large and feeding it the compressed 1080i signal from the Hopper 3 may lead to a soft picture. The Hopper on my 60" generally looks pretty decent. I could go with a 65" but the room really screams for a 77" or larger.

Dish is my primary source with some BD/DVD movies thrown in. I don't have access to high speed internet (but Xfinity looks to be coming next year) and OTA is out since the transmitters are 40 miles away with a mountain range running parallel to the line of sight to the towers. So satellite is about my only current option.

It will work great. I have a Sony Bravia 77" A9G OLED and generally sit about 12 feet away. Looks great and super sharp.

You will be able to easily tell the difference between SD and HD channels of course. Or any shows that were shot before the 90's, etc. No such thing as HD in the 90s.

Yes. Of course I don't expect older 480 material to look great. I was more concerned with modern HD broadcasts like sports and TV series.

Yeah, I might do that but after buying movies in VCR, DVD & BD format I'm not in a rush to replace them with a forth format. And even if I do, they only amount to a small percentage of my TV viewing.

I just got a Sony XR-77A80CJ tv to replace my 65" Panasonic VT60. I have the Hopper 3. It looks good. Depending on the channel and programming. Movie channels look the best, depending on the age of the movie and quality of the transfer. It is a little softer than my 65" plasma but it is a good picture. I have an Oppo BDP-203 disc player and will be purchasing a few UHD Blu-rays to try out the HDR and see what that looks like, but I am satisfied with images from the Hopper.

Thanks. I guess it is inevitable that there will be a slight loss of sharpness when you upsize the screen.

I was ready to go and purchase an XR-77A80J today but BB raised there price $200 overnight so I'm going to sit tight. They raised their prices a couple of weeks ago and within a day or two lowered them back down to where they were.

Costco has been lowering the price on the 77" Sony. I jumped when I got it for $2800 plus a $500 Costco gift card. I see now they have lowered the price to $2600 with no other incentives.

Thanks. Yeah, I've seen that. But I'm not a Costco member, the closest Costco is over an hour away and I even though it would fit in my vehicle I'd have to lay it flat for the 60 mile trip home. With BB a few minutes away it is a lot more convenient for me since they delivery free. And if there is a problem and I want to exchange it or get something else they'll deliver the replacement and pick up the return.

It will look decent. When the Hopper Plus is available I suggest getting on board there as those units have an improved video decoder chip and the picture will even look better than it is now.

Its kind of funny if you took all the Hoppers and looked at the same HD channel and shows you would see each generation the decoder is better and faster giving you a better picture on each generation. The Hopper Plus and Joey 4's improve on this as well. So its not the signal that is compressed too much, its the decoder on how good it can decompress things that's the issue. You will be surprised how good it can look.

Costco has free delivery as well. I had mine delivered to my house and they brought it in the living room.

So are you happy with the upgrade from your 65" plasma to the 77" A80CJ? Would you recommend it over the 65"? Still trying to decide and have both in my cart. Need to move on this or they will be gone soon. Thanks
