dish pissed me off

If people simply declined to have a tech at their home on a holiday, the techs would have the day off by default.

most of the holiday work is usually people that don't believe in that holiday. christmas is a traditional religious holiday here but there are people that worship other gods and simply do not care about Jesus' birthday or even the associated commercialism accompanying it. It also means many techs have to put up that beast 500+ dish on the holiday installs.
Christmas was actually a Pagan holiday that was hijacked by the Christians.

All resturants and department stores are open on JUly 4th. Why should Dish installers be excluded.

Is tv really that important that we cannot go one day without it to allow hard working people some time off to do what THEY want to do?
I wonder what the reaction would be if those who sneered at the satellite techs who had the gall to want a holiday if the complainers had to work those holidays themselves.
And not ALL of the places you mentioned are open. In many areas of the country, this is not the case.

I worked Thanksgiving 2008 Christmas 2008 and the 4th 2009. Thats the life of doing installs in house. But double time and a half isnt bad either.

ahh yes..the big difference. Subs get paid the same no matter what the calendar says.
Once again, I'd like to see how many of the number of people on here tersely stated to the effect that "why should satellite techs get holidays off" actually would work holidays themselves.

LOL
Cable around here, NOT.
Around here you have to sit home and take time off while they come in the 3rd hour of a four hour window.

Someone is getting the work done in the first hour. Someone is getting it done in the second.. I guess your getting it done in the third.

I work in a 24/7 365 job. I knew that when I signed on. Yes, I'm in a union and get OT for holidays (I am lucky, I know). I see no reason why a sat installer should have to work on a holiday. ANY holiday. TV is not a life or death need. Why are the people who are getting the install home?? Cause it's a holiday! HOWEVER, when I make an appointment, you had better be there when you say you are going to. My time is as valuable as yours. Sitting around all day for the TV guy is not how I want to spend my day off. If you tell me 8-12, damn it, be there between 8-12! At least call if you can't make the time. Not at 11:58 either. Maybe if there were a little more respect ON BOTH SIDES of the fence installers could enjoy the holidays with their families (like they should) instead of with strangers! Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes they are. And, if installers belonged to one, perhaps they would be compensated properly for working on a holiday.

No way. Unions are one reason why we are losing our mfg base. Too expensive to deal with. Archaic thinking, us vs them mentality, non flexible work rules designed to slow production to a crawl. No thanks. I tried the union route. You can have it.
A Directv office in Georgia voted to join the IBEW.
GUess what, the company just flat out refuses to negotiate with the workers.
The workers cannot certify without a contract. The company is not going to sit for baragining.
And no one can force the company to the table.
All the company needs to do is wait out the workers, terminate them one by one in a rule crackdown and there ya have it. Union out to the curb. Oh well.
BTW , do you have any idea how much costs would rise if unions reprsented workers? Think about it. Forty or fifty bucks an hour including benefits for each tech..That money has got to come from somwhere. Right out of the pockets of consumers. Ef that.

Come On

Let's not get into a politically shouting match over this.

I admit there are far too many no call or no shows on appointments. I hear it all the time.
One of my favorite sayings is "never underestimate the value of a phone call".
BTW just ti be fair, showing up and being on time for appointments cuts both ways.
Cannot tell you how many times I will confirm a job and est time of arrival only to have a missing or not at home customer.
We are required to wait 30 mins, then tag the door and leave.
Then the rocket scientist calls at the end of the day to complain that we didn't show up. Of course we keep a copy of the door tag and we give a general description of the dwelling to dispatch. Then the customer's explanation changes to " well I had to go to the store and I lost track of time. Can you come out later? I'll be back around 5 or 6 pm. I really need my tv"..
I am not kidding. This nonsense happens all the time.
Appointments....two way street.

No way that techs should have to work on major holidays, but you can't blame the customer for having an install/appointment scheduled for that day either.

The advantage that other people that work on holidays have over technicians is they know when their work shift will end. If they're scheduled from 8-4 or whatever that's it. Tech's might have to work a 15 hour day if they get some nightmare jobs or have a 2 hour drive. Scheduling plans is pretty hard when they never know when they'll be home. That kinda ruins the fun of a holiday.

Give me a break. I'm in a client service job. I work for one of the largest accounting firms in the world. I work more hours than most people and am well compensated for it. Because of that I've had to change many plans over the years. Vacations changed/cancelled, holidays missed out of town, dinners missed while working on a deadline, etc. Sometimes if I don't get my job done on time it will literally cost a company millions of dollars. But that is just part of the job. I knew it signing on and I know it today. If I ever decide that I don't want to do that anymore then I'll find somewhere else to work, I won't tell my clients it is their fault that I am leaving because they had a deadline.

Ok ..the one cosntant seen here from the "give me a break" people is they all receive premuim compensation for holiday work or as you say "well compensated". We do/are not. There is no time and half or addtional per job pay. And for you to equate critical multi million dollar accounting jobs to pay television is disengenuous at best.
Apples and oranges.
The other factor is that TV has become like a narcotic for some. They don't care about anything or anyone else as long as they get their tv "fix". If that requires a person to give up holidays which for most are family time, so be it. Now to be fair, it is NOT the fault of a customer if their job is scheduled on a holiday. That is NO excuse to perform one's job poorly.
When holidays pop up, we are given the option of working. We are open for business but the office staff is off. I opt out of holidays. While others do not mind working. It is what it is . If a worker agrees to put in time on holidays, that is their choice.

No kidding? Wow, I never thought of that. All I thought about was my missing an afternoon of work. Silly me. Now to find that ignore feature.

Right on. It does work both ways. Making you wait while Jack Customer is out doing who knows what knowing that a job is scheduled is just wrong. "Never underestimate the value of a phone call", I like that. People forget, we are all human. Expecting a person to come right back with an instant reschedule now that they are home is plan selfish. Customer's fault there so they should go back in line.

questions. Were you made aware that the tech has an arrival time window? Or did you believe you were supposed to see a tech at a specific hour?
Were you under the impression the tech that had your work order had your job as the only one assigned to him that day?
Are you not aware that there are other customers every bit as important as you?
Was it your impression that the tech assigned your job was you hired help for the day?
PLease answer these questions as honsestly as you are able.

My example was that of cable in this area. No need at all for the tone of your reply. Some of your previous posts would indicate you are capable of better.

My Dish guy was outstanding. They seem to have a better approach to install appointments. So much so that I'll stick with Dish and wait for channels to get added rather than complain and leave for Direct.
