Dish Said to Plan Blockbuster Rival to Netflix

IF DISH would allow streaming from the Vip series of dvrs and the new Xip series and or the google revue boxes as well, and then allow us to sub through the menu itself of the receiver and or google revue unit, you might see the new subscriber list increase over night. BUT the price better be lower than the Netflix streaming plan + dvd that used to exist before the last price hike. Then I could see Blockbuster suddenly being a competitor. I also would like to see Blockbuster allow streaming of the latest movies, instead of waiting to get them by dvd like with Netflix. Advertise this fact incessantly. If DISH did all this , they would see their new subs increase in a short period. Considering how angry people are at Netflix and their greedy model of late, this would be a win win for both Blockbuster/DISH and the consumer as well.

But this is DISH we are talking about, and they don't seem to come out with a complete anything . Look how long we have been waiting for the Damn SLING EXTENDER.

+1 agree and i wonder where the sling extender is also;) :)

I think how well this goes over is all going to depend on cost content availability. I dropped My Netflix for Three reasons.
1) Have you ever looked at how many of the top 100 of all time on netflix are available for streaming. I want to say less than 10% but I feel certain it was less than 20%. Quite simply put the stuff available for streaming was mostly old or unpopular stuff I could care less about anyway
2) Cost
3) and I know this does not mater to most but my wife is hard of hearing in fact nearly deaf and she depends on closed captions. Netflix CC is almost nonexistent. Unless BB somehow addresses CC much better I will not get it either no matter cost or content.

Dear Customer,

I messed up. I owe you an explanation.

It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. Let me explain what we are doing.

For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something – like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores – do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us). So we moved quickly into streaming, but I should have personally given you a full explanation of why we are splitting the services and thereby increasing prices. It wouldn’t have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do.

So here is what we are doing and why.

Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD. DVD is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection of movies.

I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolves, without maintaining compatibility with our DVD by mail service.

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures, that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently.

It’s hard to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”. We chose the name Qwikster because it refers to quick delivery. We will keep the name “Netflix” for streaming.

Qwikster will be the same website and DVD service that everyone is used to. It is just a new name, and DVD members will go to qwikster.com to access their DVD queues and choose movies. One improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Members have been asking for video games for many years, but now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done. Other improvements will follow. A negative of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com websites will not be integrated.

There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). If you subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the same as your current charges. We will let you know in a few weeks when the Qwikster.com website is up and ready.

For me the Netflix red envelope has always been a source of joy. The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a Qwikster logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still, it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you.

I want to acknowledge and thank you for sticking with us, and to apologize again to those members, both current and former, who felt we treated them thoughtlessly.

Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your trust. We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than words. But words help people to understand actions.

Respectfully yours,

-Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix

p.s. I have a slightly longer explanation along with a video posted on our blog [netflix.com], where you can also post comments.

Did anybody else get this sent to their email? It seems Netflix is determined to destroy their company. They are moving too fast, and just alienating their customer base. I don't get it?...

I think netflix knows their domination in the movie rental/steaming world could only last for so long. It's a smart business move by splitting the two companies, as DVD renting is on the decline.

Yeah, I signed up with BlockBuster a couple of weeks ago via the 30 day free trial. At this time I'm not real impressed by there selection or navigating their website. Also shipping seems to take a day longer then Netflix did, so that adds up to 2 days longer turn around time. I might give them another month just to let the dust settle and see if it's really worth it.
Ghpr13:)

Very unimpressed here as well. The selection of movies is great--including new releases, but the availablity sucks. I've got 28 titles in my q and other than a couple of OLD titles they're all "short wait" or "long wait" or "unavailable" or "on order". The "short" ones seem to stay that way for a LONG time. Their distribution center is located in the same place as Netflix but shipping takes one or two days longer.

One thing ive seen with BB, is even though they say "wait", they usually ship. Xmen first class had a long wait, but shipped the same day my movie was returned. I do think they say "shipped" on one day, but do not mail it till the next.

I read on Tv predictions site today that Blockbuster streaming will initially offer it's streaming service with it's pay Tv service : DISH. Hopefully that means it will be available over our VIP receivers and or google revue units.

I can stream movies from the channels I subscribe to now, through TV Shows/Networks with my VIP722k.So it is going to be interesting to see how Dish Network will start this streaming movies project.

Man I wonder who all these Anonymous sources are that they refer to in these articles, since these things I have said here over the past week. ;)
