My buddy has a DP811 that has a balance (ugly divorce) and wanted to know if that receiver can be used for OTA tuner without being hooked to a Dishnetwork dish. When he turns it on it searches for signal and he cannot get past that screen.

Thanks

No, it needs to see a dish to work. I don't think it needs to be activated, so if he were to put up a dish and feed a cable to the 811, it might work.

How did he manage to get the 811 and the HDTV if the divorce was so ugly?

Sold the house and the Ex had no clue or care about the electronics. Oh, and now he said there is no card in the front of the receiver. That is weird to me.

Which satellite should he point to if he doesn't want to buy/install Superdish? Will a 500 work?
Thanks!

Point the dish at the 110/119 pair. A Dish 500 is perfect for that.

an 811 has no card :)

if he wants it for just oTA, get a 18" DirecTV or Dish300 and aim at 119

thats all you would need :)
