Do you guys think DISH will release an IRD with active Firewire?

I was using Comcast's Motorola 6200 and it has an active Firewire output which I can use to record all the HiDef channels to my JVC 30K DVHS. Then I switched to DISH due to its international channels, but it seems like 811, 921, 942 none of them has an active firewire port(I'm using 811 now). So DISH/DirecTV will never release any receiver with active firewire so I can record some HDTVs?

Any information?

If your really into hard core archiving HD, i recommend you wait for the 2wire box (media portal) from SBC for Dish. It's about the only thing they have in the pipe that truly looks promising. I would say probably about Oct - Nov at the earliest.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a Dish HD with a firewire. The 921 owners already got burned on this. And, if and when one comes out I would wait to see if it actually works too!

Man I guess Firewire=fire-in-a-wire :) because you guys sound kinda on fire with anger!
Well, yeah. When you buy a box mainly because of an advertised feature and then get shafted, you tend to get angry.

Sorry to see this a bit late ... did you call Comcast to see if they had the channels you want?

When I switched to Comcast from Dish over a year ago, it was only because they finally did offer my channel (TV5) in our area. But there was nothing specific on their web site about it, and I only found out by calling after one of their "marketing specialists" rang the doorbell and swore they did (which of course he didn't actually know at all). I believe Comcast still doesn't have as big a selection of international as Dish, but if they have what you want, that's all that matters.

And, like you, I really do like being able to record HD!!!

Make sure to get a box with USB 2.0 like the 942. It will allow you to archive in a future software release. he he, hehe, hahahhahahahhaha. Ok just kidding. It will never work. Never I say!

What a skeptic. Sure it will. And as soon as somebody makes either a blu-ray recorder or D-VHS VCR with a USB 2.0 port, we'll be all set. I heard Sony is planning that right after the Hades hockey team wins the Stanley Cup.

With the announced transition to mpeg4 the 6000+mod cost is very risky.

There will not be firewire unless is becomes a popular and trusted (content protection) industry standard.

Hi-Def DVD recorders will likely move us in that direction, but it's probably 5 years out.

I'm waiting for Comcast to simulcast the ananlog channels in digital form(all analog below 100), once they have that, I'll sign up with Comcast and probably keep DISH for international channels. Of course, if Comcast can also carry VOOM, that'll be cool.

Sometimes I really want to record some HD programs(not OTA), but I don't have a HD DVR(942 will cost $700! crazy, you can lease one from Comcast for $0 down at any time) and I already paid $259 for my JVC DVHS VCR, so I still like comcast's Firewire solution. Either BlueRay or HDDVD recorder solution will be at least 3~4 years away.

I don't think modding a 6000 is worthy now given that MPEG-4 is coming(probably first for HDs).
