I can see the use in the optical out, the IR remote, and the built-in caller ID. This is a 7th generation receiver with a 32-bit processor so the menus should be fast and this unit should be DIRT CHEAP, but I can't see any need for component video for an SD only receiver, OR buying one with the Wink service since that is no longer used by D*. You will need a newer generation receiver such as the D10 (non Samsung version) for the new interactive features, but these lack DD output. I would choose DD out over interactive for sure. If the RF remote isn't a must have, there are other, better quality & better looking receivers IMO.

I've sold both, but the mere fact it's an RCA (& the fact they STILL have one of one my customer's in repair for the past 3 months for the SECOND time under warranty!) makes me recommend the Hughes hand's down.

Picture quality is the same, but the menu's & guide on the Hughes are easier to read & you can customize more than you can the RCA.
NO turbo tune, which, myself, I could NOT do w/out - I also like the 1-line guide on the Hughes as well.
Like the remote on the Hughes better, too - again, I've had too many people with the RCA remotes that seem to "loose" their codes. Just more of RCA's junk.

The ONLY thing the 486 has going for it is the RF remote, but you can use remote sender cones with any brand of receiver.

Unfortunately, I understand the D10's are made by RCA as well...

I would not pay for the TIVO service on any of them, nor would I have them hooked up to a phone jack.

BUT, I would be able to puase Live TV, although most every other feature would be useless.

Let me know what you would think of an R10 as a standard receiver, and then I always could activate the TIVO service later in the future!

Well, NOW you're talking apples & oranges...

IMHO, as a standard receiver, a D-Tivo is not one of the best, especially compared to a Hughes.

BUT, if you would go ahead & spring for the Tivo service - ALL of us Tivo-ite's GUARANTEE that you won't even care, because you would find that you would NOT even miss most of those functions on the standard Hughes. Tivo TOTALLY changes the way you watch TV - you really find that you do NOT use the prog guide the same way that you used too. (ie: much less, since it does all the work of getting your favorite shows for YOU)

Also, look at it this way - for the xtra $5 you pay for Tivo service, you also are getting TWO receivers for the price of one. (EVERY D-Tivo has 2 tuners, so you can record 2 different shows at once, or watch 1 live & record another - keep in mind that you can even playback a pre-recorded show while recording 2 live ones) I also GUARANTEE it will be the best $5 a month you'll ever spend!

As far as the phone jack, once you get through the initial set-up, you don't really need a phone jack anyway, so don't let a little thing like that stop you from treating yourself to a D-Tivo. (just search the DVR forum for all the info you could want about it) But do keep in mind, you do need 2 feeds from your dish to be able to use both tuners on the Tivo - but it will also work w/one feed only, but you won't be able to do 2 live shows at once.

they are the same price...im just wondering why?

isnt the Hughes older? Is the Hughes faster or what?

They both are series 2, but the R10 comes pre-loaded w/Folders, but the other series 2's are supposed to get the upgrade as well. I've read other posts where some people say the R10 are faster, but others say they can't really tell the difference. But I also understand the Hughes units are easier to hack for extra features. (no, not stealing service - again, read over the DVR forum for posts like this) If you don't really have any desire to do this, like many people, then I'd just go for the R-10.
