Besides Tivo how many other cable DVRs are out there?

I have a cabled friend who wants a DVR, They had planned on getting a Tivo till the lifetime service went away:(

So are there any other similiar lifetime options out there?

None that I'm aware of, Bob. That's the reason why TiVo felt that it could drop the Lifetime option, lack of competition.

They don't want to use the DVR their cable company offers? Do they have HDTV(s)?

they dont have much money kids in college..

comcast wants 10 bucks a month for their DVR.

no high def, all the bucks for college....

wasnt microsoft coming out with a DVR

Well, there's the Media Center Edition software, but you'd have to have a PC with a TV tuner card hooked up to the TV. Right now, there's no subscription charge for DVR functionality.

There's also SageTV, MythTV, BeyondTV...if they're tech-savvy they can go here and learn what it takes to build their own DVR.

There are certain S1 TiVos that can be used as dumb VCRs for manual recording(s) without the subscription fee. Everything beyond that, S2 and S3, are doorstops without a subscription.
