Am new to Dish(had C band for 20 years)with a duel input 722k and want to add an extra hardrive and as I store a lot of programs for future use. I realize that if the receiver unit ever goes bad that I would loose all my HD recordings,so will put them on an external HD. (at least a 500gb) Is there any particular brand that works better on this set up,or does it make any difference. Talked to Dish and they said I can choose which HD I want to use.(internal or external) once installed.
Also, has anyone had a channel, when first turned on,be very stretched, and then after changing to another channel and back, its normal. This has only happened 3 times in the 4 months and out of the many recordings that I have made. Naturally it recorded them very stretched out.(picture looked like outer limits)
Thanks John
Can I get this post to also be posted on Technical Discussions,or do I have to retype it.(yes I am lazy)

not sure about the hard drive cause i don't have one, but i do know you can use one. as long as it is one with a single hard drive in the case, it cannot be one with two HDDs. they are usually the thicker versions. they actually contain two hard drive but the package will say somehting like 1TB(but it is actually two HDD that are 500GBs). also the hard drive will need to a powered one. good luck on the external hard drive.

as for the stretching of channels, your remote has a format button(the * button). the channel may have been stretched for whatever reason. just cycle through the format button to find the normal setting. however you might have been on a channel that stretches a 4x3 program to 16x9. this is common and an annoyance that i wish programmers would not do. the reciever should remember which format was picked for that station, but sometimes it reverts to another. hope it all works out for you.

p.s. copy and paste is an easy way to repost things. no need to retype it all.

No need to copy, I moved thread as it was in the 922 sub forum. :) as above stated check your format button most EHDD's under 2 gigs will work, check the EHDD Bug thread and you can figure out which do or don't... I have Western Digitals, Seagates & Maxtor drives...

external hardrive

Dish only shows the ITB Seagate Showcase and says any hardrive with the red sticker Dish compatible on it will work. I called Seagate and they told me they don't make that showcase anymore and don't make any that is completely compatible with Dish. I checked Best buy and they had a good number of hardrives, but non of them had the red Dish compatible sticker on it. I checked the thread on external hardrives and after reading 5 or so pages,it seems everybody is having trouble with them. The man at Seagate said to use one of theres I would have to first set it up on my computer.
Does anyone know of a hardrive that is compatible with Dish,as Dish is about as dumb as I am on the subject. Help

Have 11 Western Digital HDs. Never had a problem with any of them.
The last one purchased was a WD My Book Essentials 2 TB. Working fine.

Thanks everybody for the comebacks. Went to the Western Digital site and they have models specifically for my 722K. (even had the red Dish sign on site) Will get the WDH1S1oooN.(one TB) What is the 922 they were talking about on the other site? Is it a newer version than my 722K? Didnt understand what trouble they were having.
Thanks again for help John

Those are over priced "marketing" units. No better than their standard EHDs.

I bought the WDHIS10000N from WD. I know I paid extra for it,but since its the one they recommend and I know how I can screw things up,I figured to play it safe. Its called My DVR Expander(1TB) and the instruction book with it told exactly how to set it up and even had pictures of all the different screens you see while setting it up. The Teck who helped me set it up had no idea how Dish orientated it is and especially the instructions. Thanks again for all your inputs. John

Just about any major brand external HDD with its own power supply will work. Dish recommends to stay away from the really cheap off brand HDD's as they have had problems with those working properly.

Ex hardrive working good, but it doesn't have an off switch. I guess WD wants them running all the time, but thru out a year,a switch would save many hours of run time. Not all the tecks are completely up to date on the Ex drives,as one told me (at the start) that I could record directly to either hardrive, but found out from the teck who hooked me up that you can only record directly to the internal hardrive and can then transfer them back and forth between the two drives. Dish has made it very easy to use.

I just ordered this for $45 plus $5 shipping to go with a 211k receiver...
Newegg.com - Recertified: Western Digital Elements 1TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDBAAU0010HBK

Could unplug your external hard drive when not in use, put it on a timer, or ideally plug it into the back of your stereo receiver (to be turned on when the receiver turns on) in order to save a small amount of energy.

Timers might be a good idea for Dish receivers also, so long as you can keep it scheduled to reboot & download updates daily while power is on (default reboot & download time is 3am) and so long as you don't miss out on any critical DVR recordings as a result (makes it too much of a hassle to reasonably accomplish in my view). Unfortunately, Dish receivers are known to use about as much power when "off" as they do while they're on.
