I just wondered if anyone has thought of forming a D* consumer group that would communicate directly with D* to let them know our wishes/desires/problems with regard to D* service. I hesitate to use the term 'pressure group', but if such a group had sufficient members, wouldn't D* have to listen seriously?

Maybe D* knows what people are thinking anyway through reading this and similar forums.

Just an idea - maybe a stupid or crazy idea - but there you are!!!

Do you really think a big company (D*) would care what a small group of people have to say regarding thier multi billion dollar company.

Keep in mind that US HD users are a very small minority when considering the whole company.

I remember talking to my "local" network engeneer about HD and why it was so intermittant with signal strenth and content, being in HD or not.

I was told basically that HD was not as important at the time, the network HAS TO HAVE AN ANALOG SIGNAL, because everyone gets it, while people with HD sets suffer waiting to have thier programming in HD.

But also keep in mind that we're the ones paying the most and providing more profit (as a percentage) than the average customer. HD is the future, so DirecTV and others better start paying attention, or they're going to find themselves behind the competition.

Regardless that we pay the most on average, we are so in the minority that once you add up all the rest of the users, our sector is way over shadowed.

Example:

100% 15,000,000 subs
25% HD Users (no way but....) 3,750,000 x $100/mo = 375,000,000
75% SD Users 11,250,000 x $55/mo = $618,750,000

HD is some -243,750,000 less in revenue (this is only an example but you see the point)

Yes - but if you then assume a cost basis, the HDs will net out pretty evenly on net profit. Let's say cost is $30 per customer (initial setup, programming, billing, advertising, etc). Now using your example:

100% 15,000,000 subs
25% HD Users 3,750,000 x ($100/mo - $30 cost) = 262,500,000
75% SD Users 11,250,000 x ($55/mo - $30 cost) = $281,250,000

So SD may generate overall revenue, but HD is much more profitable.

ric,

what about the cost of the spaceways that are dedicated for HD??

that cost directv plenty, and the sd subs are subsidizing that.

There are not enough HD subs currently to make this true. HD subs may earn more per person, but there are so few as compared to the regular subs they do not earn more TOTAL.

...Both SW's were actually launched with the intention of providing broadband internet, actually. So, a little unfair to peg this on HD custy's :)

The HD customers are by FAR more profitable than SD customers - that it definatly something to consider. HD customers tend to get more sports packs (Big $$) and have a higher tier of programming than a SD customer.
