Does any current FTA receiver come with a UHF remote control? Many older analog satellite IRD receivers came with UHF remote control and so do some current Dish Network receivers such as the VIP722. Why is this feature often not seen on high end FTA receivers?

Easy enough to "fake" with a powermid or similar IR-UHF-IR transmitter/receiver combo. My FTA recievers are located in the utility room and send TV throughout the house.

I was going to say the same thing, because that's what I do too, however it depends upon what the OP wants the UHF capability for. I use the powermid things from everywhere inside my house, and I agree that they work great, however the place I've missed the UHF capability most has been outside at the dish. With my analog receivers, I used to be able to use the UHF capability to move the dish and change channels, etc, while outside aligning the dish, with the receiver still inside (I say "used to" because my UHF remote pretty much died, and I'm stuck using a universal IR remote now).
I've tried running an extension cord out to the dish, and plugging in one of my powermid things, but it doesn't reach back into the house. I have been meaning to try another device I have, which is a universal remote with UHF capability, however I don't have great hopes for it either, unless I could get it to send to one of the powermid things, however the one time I tried THAT, it kind of went beserk, and the two remote extender things started sending gibberish to each other.
I've never used such things, but there used to be some computer based IR emitter things that you could buy. If these are still available, another option would be control via computer, and if you hook up a wireless LAN, this can be from any location in and around the house. I was able to get my laptop up on my LAN from out at my dish, and I could control my TWINHAN/TSREADER system which is on a desktop PC down in my basement from out at my dish. Only problem was seeing the laptop screen in bright sunlight.

I've had good results using a Next Generation Remote Control Extender. There is a small battery/transmitter that replaces one of the AA or AAA batteries in your remote (sleeves for each battery type are included). The remote control receiver looks like a little UFO with an antenna on it. It can be located in a line of sight to your receiver, or a you can connect the supplied wired IR emitter and attach it near your satellite receiver's IR window. They include two battery/transmitters so one can always be charging. I do a lot of channel changing and these little batteries last at least a couple of weeks for me. I inject my satellite receiver output into our cable TV where it comes into the house. We can just take the remote around the house to watch FTA on any TV. It seems to have long range. You might check the sponsors to see if anyone is currently carrying this item. I've seen it recently on Amazon for about $30. Google it and you can find more info. (I've used it with success on different Coolsat models and a Captiveworks receiver).

I liked the RF RC feature in older Analog receivers.

However, with todays price down demand, the RF feature was left out of new FTA receivers.

The Terk RC extender my do the job.

  • Operates most audio and video components from up to 100 feet away
  • Easy to use
  • Can control virtually any household device that is operated via infrared remote control, including satellite receivers, personal video recorders, VCR’s, CD players, stereo receivers, tape decks, etc.
