OTA and internet TV expert, but FTA Newbie here.

I just set up my first FTA Ku dish. I have a WS international WS9036 and I'm using the WS ESX521 LNB that came with it, and 2 receivers: an Openbox S10 (with OpenBox S9 - S12 06182012-America firmware installed), and an X Square M2, a $22 SD box I got on Amazon. I managed to get the dish set up with the X Square M2 on Galaxy 19. I did a blind scan and viola! I have tons of channels. But the channel I really need, TFC West (Canada) has no sound. I discovered on another forum ( http://ftabeta.com/showthread.php?t=55028 ) that TFC West has no sound with an SD receiver. So I hooked up the S10 and did a blind scan and - NOTHING. not even 1 channel.

My goal is to help friends and family set up an inexpensive FTA system for watching TFC West.

So I have a few questions:
1> What have I missed with the S10, what am I doing wrong? Can someone walk me through the settings for me to get Galaxy 19 on the S10?

2> Can any of you with HD receivers confirm they have sound on TFC West, and what receiver and the size of the dish they are using?

3> Can anyone recommend a good, inexpensive receiver that works for TFC west? The Pansat 9000 and 9200, Viewsat HD, Coolsat 9000 HD, and Dreamlink HD are confirmed to work on TFC, but I'm not looking to spend another $150-$200 on this project, perhaps the X Square Premium HD? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008TJQZ76/?tag=satell01-20 Any other suggestions?

Did you set the LO Frequency correctly in your receiver for your LNBF? A typical Ku value would be 10750.

The SD box probably does not have the AC3 decoder to get the sound. My Viewsat Ultra has the same issue.
The S10 is not confirgured properly.
What type of LNB are you using and what are the settings in the S10 antenna setup menu?

Trip,
Good to see you here!
Yep, You're right, I set it for 10750, and its scans.

Update: TFC, with sound, in the clear with the S10. Anyone looking for a good, cheap receiver for most of whats on Galaxy 19, the X2 M1 works fine. But my X2 is for sale!

Rule 1: My buddy Trip always knows more about TV than me!

Thanks!
~Bill

So I'm set for myself, but I still need suggestions for inexpensive receivers and dishes for my friends ad family to get TFC. For dishes, I'm going to give an old DirecTV slimline and a World Direct dish a try and see if that works, but I suspect a 30" dish will be needed.

"X2 Premium" all the way! You can't get cheaper than that ($54 right now, but it does sometimes go higher) http://www.ebay.com/itm/271146566320?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 OR: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008TJQZ76/?tag=satell01-20

They also release better firmware quite often, and are getting through the bugs. New firmware just came out yesterday. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/292539-X2-Premium-HD-PVR-Satellite-Receiver

The MicroHD by SatelliteAV is also a very good receiver, supported in the US, and you can get it on Ebay for $108~ http://www.ebay.com/itm/microHD-GEO...US_Satellite_TV_Receivers&hash=item3f1a591c69

IF you have very complicated switches and motors and such, I'd think the MicroHD might be better for you. If you don't, then the X2 Premium does well.

I have both, but I have not as of yet played much with the X2 Premium, so the latest firmware might work fine with motors and switches. I use the MicroHD extensively, with 2 KU dishes (1 motorized 90cm, 1 fixed 1.2m) and a 10ft C-band dish (motorized)

MicroHD from SatelliteAV is a great receiver - well supported.

If all you want to do is watch Galaxy 19 at 97w, then any inexpensive HD capable receiver is all you need.

PS I'm in the Toronto area.

Primestar 31,
Thanks for the feedback!
My needs will become more advanced as time passes and I add a motor. I think the S10 I have will serve my needs IF I can do the fix for motor power I found here on the forum. However, what I'm looking for is an inexpensive, basic box for galaxy 19 that gets TFC west to set up the wife's family and friends with.

Properly modified with a suitable LNBF, I would expect a DTV Slimline might work.
The World Direct is designed for exactly this task, so if you keep the feedhorn that matches the oval dish shape, that should be fine, as is (no mods).

The Slimline and World Direct have both been modified to take a single standard Ku LNB. The question is, will they be large enough to be reliable from my location @ 41 degrees and Southward. I will experiment, but that's a task for another day. My next task is to get the cable run to the living room so we don't have to go out on the patio to watch!

Well to get the AAC audio, think you're going to have to 'bite the bullet' and get a capable HD box. And with current trends, might as well bite hard enough to get a DVB-S2.

Suggestion - Send the S10 'down the road' if for a fixed dish system, get yourself the microHD. Then you're set for switches, motors, etc.
With the World direct dishes modified with a standard LNBF the effective area, that the LNBF 'sees', will be some less than the height of the dish along the center-line. (If we knew the offset angle, it could be calculated) Suspect it's somewhere around an inch to three inches less than the height.
A 30 inch Channel Master works plenty fine here on 97W. (48N)
