I got on ebay a DSR 905 Sidecar and an Analog Toshiba TRX-1520

Both have the remotes

There are two videocipher boards with this, one is black, which iirc, was used by the eye patch crowd.

Anyway, i was wondering for $67 if this was a good deal, I been wanting a 4dtv.

Does the toshiba trx-1520 tune a little better then the drake?

Sounds like a great deal to me. As long the battery is good in the 905 heck some folks have paid almost $67 for a good 4Dtv remote. I don't know much about the toshiba trx-1520 but as all it will tune is analog all I would be concerned about is how good of a job it would do as a dish mover.

I have the 1420 which is the same as the 1520 except for 2 things
-1420 has IR remote, 1520 has UHF remote
-1520 has a TI filter, the 4120 does not

as lonewolf noted, its a dish mover and you can get a few freebie chanenls that are still there

well im not sure yet if the 1520 is going to replace the throne that the drake is on, it depends on how sensitive of tuner is in the toshiba.

the 905 is newer receiver, so im thinking the battery oughta be real good in it.

I am sure that you already know this but in case you don't.
Take a look at your 905's serial number the 7th digit will tell you the year of manufacter.

Several months ago I bought my battery and the holder for my 920 from Radio Shack. Every day I hold my breath hoping that old battery would not go out. I have instructions on how to do the project. I can't afford to send it off to ATS. I have been seeking anyone around here who know how to solder lead wires to the motherboard. Look easy, there's two holes, one near the positive lead of the original battery, and the other hole near the negative lead. Instructions say to put the lead wires 1/8 inch (making sure not go thru the motherboard and shorting out at the box itself) into each hole, solder, and quickly snip the old (-) lead, pop in the new battery into the holder, and ta da, you're done!
Sounds easy, doesn't it? Be my luck, I would try it and end up with a worthless box.

well that sounds like a pita to replace do batterys fail slowly? if the voltage is good, should i not worry about it?

what was motorola's stupid reason for having the unit id fail? couldnt they of had it stored in non-volatile memory, instead of requring a battery?

The battery was placed in all DC and VCII+ units as a security feature, many hackers killed there 4dtv/star choice receivers after ordering ppv and thinking they can disconnect the battery, hahaha they were not to successful, also many who tried to connect the unit to a pc also took the battery out and killed the board.

You would probably want to change the battery before 10 years.

the guy said it hasnt been in use for 2 years. So i hope and pray the battery is good
