I believe when it first started Lyngsat was part of SatcoDX, then went off on its own.

Satellite TV Week chart & Fred Hoffman's sports column that listed what satelites were used most for backhauls. In 1997, Fred talked about a group called backhaul on the telelists group (before one was created at egroups) where people posted backhauls. Lyngsat didn't become popular until closer to 2000.
