Hi everyone,

I woke up this morning and got the 'hard drive failure' error on my 722k. There's no warranty left on my receiver, I own the equipment, so I opened it up and removed the drive, tested it and as I expected its completely dead. I tried replacing it with another I had laying around but nothing. I tried hooking up an external hard drive it gives me the prompt to format it, but the receiver just keeps resetting prompting me again to reformat. In the end I still have TV, but no DVR function, since I cannot get the external one to work My questions are, since I'd like get DVR service back, do I need a specific type of drive to work with the 722k? I've read there are only certain ones that'll work, but so far have been unable to find a specific list. And should or can an external drive work, if the primary one has failed? If anyone could help me out Id really appreciate it. Thanks.

Any drive that was "listed" is probably no longer to be had. The receiver won't boot up without an internal hard drive, so a"skip over" to an external won't work.

Thanks, thought of that, but thats not an option for me right now.
Curious as to why not. Surely more advantageous than the time and money that would be spent trying to get a new drive ( IF you even can).

Dish should replace the receiver even without the protection plan, you will have to pay shipping without it.
Here is a list of drives that work but you will have a hard time finding any of them. The numbers must be exact.

Keep us posted on how it works out, it should be painless as the receiver will walk you through it. If all goes well you should be up and running in about 15 minutes.

I haven't seen hide nor hair of dishmod in months. I think somebody deleted it from Yahoo Groups.

Interesting. I think I had to pay like $100 for a seagate back when. Good to know they are still out there. I was barely able to find mine

That is the same one I got for mine a couple of years ago on ebay. Paid around $50 shipped.
Still have the one I replaced because there was nothing wrong with it.
The drives used in dish dvr's are pretty robust as my second receiver I did not replace the drive is going on 8 years old.

How come you replaced the drive if there was nothing wrong with it?
Because it was 4-5 years old and did not want to risk loosing content I had recorded. Saw what I thought was a good deal on a replacement and went for it.
But mostly because I missed working on and modifying receivers like I did in the past when I had the "everything package";)

Gotcha. I lost a HDD in one of my purchased 722s which is the only problem I have had with any of the receivers Ive purchased. I was pretty amazed how simple it was to swap.

Maybe I'm crazy, but since I removed the old drive that died and am temporarily running without one, the picture quality has seemed to improve, brightness on HD channels especially. I had noticed the past few weeks just before the drive failed that the picture quality wasn't great, I thought it was just my TV. Has anyone else experienced that? Or is it all in my head?

It's probably in your head. Or maybe you reseated the HDMI cable, and that did something...
