Given all the discussion surrounding limited capacity and the recent addition of HD PPV, I thought it would be interesting to know how popular the HD PPV channels are. If no one is using them, they could dump a few and free up bandwidth for more channels. I have my own perspective on the HD PPV's which has caused me to never have ordered a movie. I am curious what others here think.

I ordered and watched the HD version of the Transformers. The surround sound was truly awesome. The best that I have ever heard.

Never ordered one and I have Netflix. But even so they thus far have not offered anything that interests me enough to choose it over a DVD. Also the price makes a difference. Its a bit high for me HD or not.

i use netflix too and never bought any ppv movies and not planing on getting any..my son got transformers on ppv and was very disapointed in it

Based on the purely unscientific results we have here, assuming the poll represents percentages which are similar to your average HD subscriber with Dish, you can start to estimate how much money they are making from this. The one thing I'm not clear on is what percent of their 13+ million subscribers have HD receivers. If I assume 10% (1.3 million HD subscribers), and multiply the number of movies purchased by $4.99, I estimate about $3.8 million Dish has grossed on HD PPV rentals so far. While I'm sure I have some bad assumptions in all of this, no matter how you look at it, the HD PPV number for Dish is not trivial. But this is a company that grosses around $10 billion. Keeping and adding subscribers clearly drives more revenue. Giving up some of the HD PPV channels in favor of adding more HD content could be a decent argument. Next time I have lunch with Charlie, I think I'll suggest this :) Like he hasn't thought of it already!

I rented one, Rocky Balboa, and would prefer to spend the extra $1 to get PPV movies in HD, but I just don't order PPV very often... maybe once or twice a year if E* is lucky.

I ordered shooter in HD PPV, it was SWEET and I always look at what's on.

I think 4.99 is a great price for HD movies. My friends spend so much more on blueray movies...

I'd consider PPV if...
I was so invalid I could not leave the house AND
the internet connection had been down for over a week AND
I had read every book, magazine, newspaper, and cereal box in the house.

Even then I'd probably hobble out on the porch and watch/listen to the wildlife :)

I rented two HD DVDs from Hollywood Video the other day; I'd prefer to PPV Dish HD, as I can keep them, even though the HD DVDs look better. Plus the PPV is cheaper.

We have ordered SD PPVs occasionally, but if the HD PPV selection is as good as the SD's, we would have ordered the HD versions for $1 extra easily.

BTW if you ask about the SD PPV survey, the breakdown may be similar, yet you don't see them taking off some from the large number of the SD PPV channels. In fact if you survey how many ordered PPV porns, I bet even a smaller percentage had done so but still it is a big renevue source. Like the math a previous post did, $3.8 million additional income is not bad for 5 HD PPV channels. If they remove most of them and put three new HD channels on instead, I bet the additional revenue would not justify it because they can not charge extra for adding that three, and depending on who you talk to I doubt three more HD's will suddenly get a lot of people to move to E* from D* either.
