Without a subscription, the only HBO / Max channel that shows up in the guide is the HD channel 316 (LEARN) that tells you how to get HBO Max. HD channels are usually Hidden if you don't subscribe to them. The other premium packages still show up in the guide without a subscription, but that is because Dish still carries some of those channels in SD. None of the HBO or Cinemax channels on Dish are in SD. If you do not even see channel 316, then you do not have a receiver that is capable of receiving HD channels.
Even with an HD receiver, keep in mind that some of the HBO and Cinemax channels on Dish are streaming-only. Those channels would require a newer receiver with the Hopper interface. ViP receivers, and Hoppers that are not connected to the internet, would not be able to see those streaming channels in the guide.
